Exemplaire numéroté sur velin de Rives, non coupé en excellent état (défauts à l’étui). Tristan Bernard, de son vrai nom Paul Bernard, né à Besançon le 7 septembre 1866 et mort à Paris le 7 décembre 1947, inhumé au cimetière de Passy, romancier et auteur dramatique français. Il est célèbre pour ses mots d'esprit. Il aurait inventé le jeu des petits chevaux. Lucien Boucher dessinateur, graveur, affichiste et illustrateur français né à Chartres en 1889 et mort en 1971. Diplômé de l’École de céramique de Sèvres, il commence sa carrière en tant que caricaturiste pour l'hebdomadaire humoristique Le Rire et contribue également à quelques numéros de Fantasio. Il se consacre principalement à partir des années 1920 à la création d'affiches pour le cinéma et la publicité et réalise de nombreuses lithographies inspirées du surréalisme. Il est connu principalement pour une série d'affiches publicitaires et de planisphères réalisés pour Air France.

Four small black ink spots to boards a hint of wear to corners title and dedication leaf a bit foxed occasional mild foxing elsewhere but an excellent copy--the text clean and fresh with capacious margins and the beautiful contemporary binding lustrous and virtually unworn.<br/> <br/> This extremely attractive poetic production is called by Hugo "a magnificent result of the efforts of the wood-engraver type-founder papermaker and printer" and it is offered here in a richly decorative contemporary binding. The text is composed of two poems by Oliver Goldsmith "The Traveller" and "The Deserted Village" and one poem by Thomas Parnell "The Hermit" accompanied by biographical sketches of each writer that of Parnell written by Goldsmith. The charming illustrations are the work of the Bewick brothers. More than any contemporaneous artist or printer Thomas Bewick 1753-1828 was responsible for a renewed interest in wood engraving his virtuosity and prolific output in the medium raising its reputation in book production. And here his artworks are accompanied by those of his brother John 1760-95. The large scenes which gracefully depict the figures from the poems are accompanied by the small head- and tailpiece vignettes for which Thomas Bewick is best remembered the gently sentimental scenes of rural vistas and picturesque ruins perfectly offsetting the text. Our volume was beautifully printed on heavy Whatman paper by Bewick's friend the celebrated William Bulmer who in Glaister's words was "one of the best printers of the time striving to raise the standard of English typography. To this end he perfected his own ink used good paper and specially cut types." Ray praises the printing as well as the illustrations writing that "thanks to Bulmer this is by far the handsomest of contemporary volumes containing Bewick's work." Two plates by Gontcharova six plates and a small illustration by Larionov refined typography. Natalia Gontcharova 1881-1962 was one of the most famous artists of the Russian Avant-garde. Trained in Moscow where she met Larionov 1881-1964 he was to become her life companion. She contributed to a great number of important exhibitions and both Gontcharova and Larionov played a crucial role in the development of Russian art. They settled in Paris shortly before the present edition became French citizens in 1938 and were married in 1955. Larionov exhibited his Rayonnist works at The Target exhibition in 1913 in Moscow. . The illustrations by Larionov showed his freedom in changing from one style to another within the same book as he liked to do in 1912-1913. Name chosen by the bookseller Jacques Povolozky for his publishing house. The most striking work of the symbolist poet Alexandre Block 1880-1921 the twelve red guards representing the new world.
