First printing mixed state octavo size 707 pp. This was writer Charles Dickens' 1812-1870 third novel widely anticipated and loved. He is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. In this novel Dickens explores the social issues that his works are known for such as harsh boarding schools the privilege of royal title and wealth social customs of the day and the plight of the working class. The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away. <br/><br/>The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows 1790 - 1874 best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and several other writers of the period. These caricatures add a visual element to the characters depicted by Dickens n.b. above information from Wiki. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Half red morocco leather over marbled paper boards six compartments on spine five with gilt title and author in gilt to one compartment embossed decorative and gilt borders to front and rear boards all edges marbled frontis of a young Charles Dickens supplied thirty-nine plates by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" and twenty-four plates of various characters in the novel by Kenny Meadows the extra plates. This is a mixed state in that two of the first four plates have the Chapman and Hall imprint further the correction on p.123 has been made but "latter" for "letter" still appears on p.160 line 43. Octavo size 8 1/2" by 5 1/2 " iii-vii viii-xvi 1 2-624. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Overall very good internally this volume is quite clean the text block is square the hinges are sound and the gilt on the spine is bright. Rubbing to front and rear joints corners rubbed rubbing and slight loss to marbled papers on front and rear board both front and rear hinge have been professionally repaired prior owner bookplate with inscription of "To David from Dad" vintage bookseller stamp and prior owner notes in pencil to the front pastedown offsetting from turn-ins to front and rear endpapers 1/8" tear to margin of frontispiece not affecting the image lacking the half-title hence our pagination begins with romanet iii slight damage to the foredge of plate between pages 174 and 175 not affecting the image the images have slight toning and foxing which is common. With illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. Bound in early twentieth-century half native red morocco gilt over green buckram sides. Internally clean no inscriptions. Bindings a little rubbed and shelf worn wear to joints of volume two with associated chip. A very good pair which shows well. First Edition in Book Form; originally a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens from April 4 1840 - December 4 1841; Narrator Master Humphrey was a lonely man who lived in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique grandfather clock by the chimney-corner and decides to start a little club called Master Humphrey's Clock where the members including Mr. Pickwick himself have a penchant for telling stories. In the book several short tales are recounted followed by the novels 'The Old Curiosity Shop' which follows the life of the beautiful and virtuous Little Nell and her Grandfather and 'Barnaby Rudge' Dickens first effort at historical fiction set during London's non-Popery 'Gordon' Riots Protestant rallying against the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1778. The Chimes first edition second issue with the publisher's name below the plate on the vignette title page. The Cricket on the Hearth first edition second issue with 2pp. ads. The Battle of Life first edition Todd's fifth state of the engraved title page with "A Love Story" in a scroll held by a cupid; terminal ads announce the publication in parts of Dombey and Son and the bound volume of Oliver Twist. The Haunted Man first edition first and only issue.<p>All five volumes bound in full polished calf with elaborate gilt seasonal stamping unique to each book. Morocco title labels to ribbed spines gilt dentelles all edges gilt. Sangorski & Sutcliffe stamp in gilt to front turn-in of each volume. Original cloth covers and spines bound in rear of all volumes but the last. Housed in an open-ended slipcase moderately rubbed and toned covered in the same floral gilt-embellished paper used for endpapers. Near Fine with slightly rubbed spines. Light edge toning to interiors occasional thumbing and staining and spots of foxing. <p>No writer is more closely associated with Christmas than Charles Dickens who began with the immortal A Christmas Carol in November 1843. It was published on December 19 and sold so well there were seven editions by the following May. The Chimes followed in December 1844 and three more books appeared in 1845 1846 and 1848 two of the title page dates follow the then-common practice of dating a book published in November or December with the coming year.<br /> <p>The enduring appeal of Dickens’ Christmas stories lies in his unmatched ability to combine sentimentality with melancholy or righteous fury a balancing act of light and dark. A Christmas Carol composed as Dickens walked weeping through the dark London streets was intended to draw attention to the plight of the working poor in London. The Chimes attacks the cruelty and hypocrisy of the rich and the protagonist of The Cricket on the Hearth contemplates murder. The Haunted Man the last novella emphasizes the need to remember past sorrows and hardships.<br /> <br /> <p>Dickens wanted his Christmas books to be pretty – his specifications for the first cut severely into his profits – and it is appropriate that these copies have been given jewel-like bindings by Sangorski & Sutcliffe one of the most famous fine binderies in the English-speaking world. Minor dampstaining to corners of boards of some volumes; although interior pages seem to be free from staining. Some volumes have minor soiling and/or discoloration to covers. Each volume contains illustrations - most in black and white with a few in color. Occasional smudge marks occasional tear to a page in the margin from opening the pages and sporadic spots of foxing - but overall very clean and bright interiors. Rippling to some of the illustrations which are printed on a different paper stock. Signature of previous owner in pen to front free endpapers of most volumes. All bindings remain strong. The engraved title is showing the later correction "Weller". Other issue points: p.43 2nd paragraph below chapter V line 1 reads "ruined wall" in the singular; with the signature misprint on p.261 reading X2; with signature "E" present on p.25; the d of "holding" is raised above line on p.260; p.342 line 5 "S. Veller" instead of Weller; p.400 line 21 "his friends". Some rubbing along edges of binding. Contemporary previous owner's signature on fly leaf. Plates foxed.
