Contents bound at rear with Index rather than as usual after the Editor's Preface. Title-page in red and black woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials. Occasional foxing a few ink spots and smudges first and final leaves a little dusty. Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf recently rebacked with older red morocco gilt spine label retained board edges and corners repaired endpapers replaced with armorial bookplate slightly visible beneath front paste-down. A little rubbed but a very good soundly repaired copy. Ownership inscription of Wm. Leaker of Liverpool at head of Editor's Preface A2. First appearing in France c.1357 as Voyages de Jehan de Mandeville Chevalier the name of this work's true author remains unknown. It tells the story of the narrator's supposed world travels and was enormously popular: there were further French versions as well as translations into German English Italian Dutch Spanish Irish Danish and Czech. 'Altogether over 250 manuscripts survive in twenty-two versions. In England alone there were four Latin and four English translations and a rhymed version.' ODNB 'Sir John Mandeville' claims to be an English knight born in St Albans who departed on his travels in 1322. However there is no historical evidence for his adventures and it appears that at least 90% of the narrative of the Voyages can be traced back to preexisting written sources. So who was the real author Examination of the original French text is revealing. M.C. Seymour posits 'that the author had no knowledge of St Albans but was a fluent French-speaker; that he composed his work c.1357 in a large almost certainly ecclesiastical library; that he was an ecclesiastic with a cleric's knowledge of the Bible and probably a member of a regular order; that he was a fluent reader of Latin but lacked any knowledge of Greek or Arabic; that he was an informed and intelligent reader of books describing the Holy Land and other foreign parts; that he had mastered the theories of Sacrobosco and his commentators possibly at the University of Paris on the rotundity of the world and was aware of the possibility of circumnavigation; that he had never travelled to the lands he describes; that he was aware of current French accounts of foreign lands and was in a position to launch his own work into the mainstream of the Parisian book-trade.' ODNB This anaylsis presents Jean le Long d.1388 as a likely candidate. As librarian of the Benedictine abbey church of St Bertin at St Omer in France but then under English rule and on the main route between Calais and Paris he would have had access to genuine travellers and pilgrims visiting the Mediterranean and the Near East who would have used the route and stayed at the abbey. 'The abbey's library contained all the works used by Mandeville in the compilation of the Voyages including the comparatively scarce French translation of the Directorium ad faciendum passagium transmarinum made by the hospitaller Jean de Vignay c.1340.' Despite being almost entirely fictional the Travels of Sir John Mandeville was one of the most widely read and influential travel narratives of the late middle ages. Departing initially on pilgrimage to the Holy Places Sir John first goes to Constantinople before spending time in Jerusalem Damascus and Baghdad and then setting out as far as the island of Java and China. Contemporary tan calf gilt rebacked preserving the original backstrip extremities scuffed. Provenance: with the small library label of Wolfgang A. Herz on the front pastedown his sale "Important Voyages and Travels" 9th December 2009 lot 50. First edition thus based on the text of the Cottonian manuscript first published in 1725. The text first appeared anonymously as "Voyages de Jehan de Mandeville chevalier" in France ca.1357. "In the book the narrator declares that he is Sir John Mandeville born and bred in St Albans who left England in 1322 and travelled the world for many years serving the sultan of Cairo and visiting the Great Khan and finally in 1357 in age and illness setting down his account of the world. This account is essentially in two parts a description of the Holy Land and the routes thither and a description of Asia and other partes infidelium. There is no historical corroboration of the author's claims. On the contrary nine-tenths of the substance of the Voyages can be precisely traced to written sources which range from Pliny to Vincent of Beauvais and include many itineraries of genuine travellers like William of Boldensele and Odoric of Pordenone and the remaining tenth almost certainly derives from sources yet to be traced. The intention of the author to produce a popular account of the world in French was possibly part of the fashion for such exotica that flourished in and about Paris c.1350. Though the framework of the narration by Sir John Mandeville is fictitious the substance is not. There can be no doubt whatsoever that the author reported in good faith what his authorities recorded and that his book was seriously intended" DNB. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. "It claims to be a guide both geographical and ethical for pilgrims to the Holy Land but it carries the reader far off course to Turkey Tartary Persia Egypt and India. It was an important influence on subsequent English writers from Chaucer to Shakespeare and was the prototype in English of the popular genre of the fabulous travel book" Osborne Oxford Companion. The illustrations were drawn by Valenti Angelo from those in early editions and manuscripts. The type was designed by Rudolph Koch here used for the first time in America. Gold-tooled red goatskin morocco by Robert Riviere in London ca. 1875/80 one of England's best binders.
4 “139” = 135 5 pp.A rare 17th-century English edition with about 60 different woodcut illustrations of a classic and partly fictional 14th-century account of travels presented as voyages of Sir John Mandeville through Turkey Egypt Ethiopia Syria Persia Arabia India and the East Indies. It was originally written in French and is thought to have been compiled from various sources by Jehan d'Outremeuse 1338-1400 of Liege. It includes many well-known stories and illustrations of monstrous people and animals in exotic lands: a man with only one enormous foot that he can use as a parasol a dog-headed man a man with his face in his chest a girl who turns into a dragon griffins nine-meter giants ants that gather gold diamonds that mate and give birth to baby diamonds and much more that spoke to the imagination. The book also includes genuine descriptions of the regions covered and gave many Europeans their first notions of the Near East Middle East India and East Indies. The part on Arabia includes an account of the birth of Mohammed.With early owner's inscription and bookplates along with a loosely inserted signed autograph letter ca. 1900. 8 leaves with their margins extended at the fore-edge and foot the title-page and last page somewhat worn and dirty but further in good condition with a few minor fedects.
