Je crois vous avoir prouvé que mon client a été trompé par sa femme. Les Gens de Justice
Paris: 1864. Limited edition reproduction. 38 x 31 cm. sheet size. One of 500 numbered copies on rag paper. A lawyer suggests that enough evidence has been given to demonstrate that his client was cheated on and deceived by his wife; meanwhile the client sadly listens to the proceedings. Drawing for Delteil 3278.LES MOMENTS DIFFICILES DE LA VIE a series of 7 prints numbered from 1 to 6 nr. 6 was used twice. The series appeared between March 12 and July 61864 in the CHARIVARI. In plate 2 and 6 the series title is “LES MOMENS DIFFICILES DE LA VIE†the “T†is missing. Daumier must have been quite familiar with the old judicial system in France. Normally three judges were required in a hearing accompanied by the D.A. "Procureur Impérial". The jury was usually seated along a side wall while the prisoner's bench was placed opposite to the judges. In important cases the prisoner was flanked by two policemen. The defending advocate usually was seated in front of the prisoner facing the judges. The hearings were open to the public and represented a welcome entertainment to Parisians free of charge. The judges as well as the Procureur Impérial were appointed by the Ministry of Justice and were not always free from political influence and conviction. The prosecutor held the rank of a magistrate but wore slightly different robes than the judges. Paris: 1864 unknown

DAUMIER, Honore (1807-79)
La France se preparant a passer ses candidats sous la toise
Paris: Le Charivari 1869. Lithograph. Small 4to image size 8¼" X 10". Very good. Light even age toning. This is the May 3 1869 second state of Plate 73 in this illustrated newspaper's "Actualites" series and a strong clean impression. It depicts a statuesque crowned woman representing France and resembling our Statue of Liberty standing at right atop a scale with a measuring pole. Her right hand rests across her bosom and her left hand clutches the adjustable height bar near the top of the measuring pole. Behind her and at left stand a crowd of Frenchmen in suits and ties all staring apprehensively at her. The caption reads in translation "France preparing to get her candidates to pass muster under the measure of standards." Immediately below the plate at lower left is printed "A. de Vresse r.Rivoli 55" while at lower right is printed "Lith. Destouches r. Paradis Pre 28" and the stone number "16" appears in the base of the scale. A quite nice copy printed on wove paper. The rare first state was printed on newsprint stock and bore no caption and the rare third state bore a different caption than the second state. This print is displayed in a single cream matte and a ½" black wooden frame overall dimensions 13" X 16". Very good. Slight bit of dampstaining at upper left and lower right of matte not affecting print. Verso of frame bears the label of noted New York art gallery E. Weythe Art Books Prints. Daumier produced a vast number of social caricatures roughly 4000 in number many done for this famed publication. From the collection of former Illinois Senator ADLAI E. STEVENSON III b. 1930 son of the Illinois governor of the same name 1900-65 and great-grandson of the U.S. vice president of the same name 1835-1914. DR 3708. Le Charivari unknown

LE VENTRE LEGISLATIF
Daumier Honore French 180.8-1879. LE VENTRE LEGISLATIF. Lithograph 1834. Published by L'Association Mensuelle in the issue of January 1834. With the ceneterfold but also folded horizontally. Signed in the stone. 11 x 17 1/8 inches image 14 x 21 1/2 inches sheet. The folds are apparent in the margins but very unobtrusive in the image. The title translates as "The Legislative Belly." The print is Daumier's satirical commentary on kind of people who made up the Chamber of Deputies in January of 1834. He shows them fat and self-satisfied implying that concern for the public good was not first on their minds. 1834 was a very volatile year in French politics with an insurrection in Lyon which was put down by military force. Conservatives who supported the monarchy and the status quo won the elections to the Chamber of Deputies. Only 200000 people those who paid a minimum of 200 Francs in taxes were eleigible to vote the population of France was then 30000000. This print with its strong graphic design and its forthright critique is among Daumiers most significant works. unknown

DAUMIER, Honore
Les Bohemiens de Paris
DAUMIER Honore. Les Bohemiens de Paris. With 28 lithographs by Daumier. Folio. 345 x260 mm.Matted in a cloth folding case. Paris: Au Bureau de Journal Amusant & du Petit Journal pour Rire 1840-1842. Complete set of Daumier's "Les Bohémiens de Paris" series. All the prints in the present set are "sur blanc" i.e. printed individually on superior white wove paper without the text of the Charivari journal on the verso. Because of the finer paper and printing methods 'sur blanc' impressions are much more prized than those which appeared within the journal itself. Les Bohémiens de Paris figures prominently in Rumas' Daumier: 120 Great Lithographs which especially reproduces and describes Plate 9 "A Professional Sponger about to crash a fashionable Wedding Party" Plate 15 "A Sick-Nurse the French equivalent of Dickens' Sairy Gamp" and Plate 20 "A Minor Actor in a small theater who plays Wealthy Monarchs though actually starving here eating French Fries!. Plates 135671112142324252627 belong to Delteil's 2nd state of 3; The rest are all 3rd state. The first state avant la lettre are invariably described as "fort rare" and are now unfindable. In excellent condition. Delteil 822-849. BN Fonds Français Après 1800 Tom. V p. 478 No. 157. hardcover
