Tall 8vo 10 x 7 inches old half leather and marbled boards with recent cloth over spine good with ex-library marks from CMU including their withdrawn stamp ownership signature of William Lucien Scaife 1853-1924 who studied engineering and metallurgy in Germany after college and then came back to Pittsburgh where he was involved in Scaife family businesses. 580 pp illustrated with in-text woodcuts throughout attributed to Daumier Grandville Meissonier Gavarni and other prominent French illustrators by a European seller who is offering a copy of this but we are not certain of all those artists -- some of the illustrations are indeed signed by Daumier. A near fine example.<br /> <br /> "The central panel in Daumier's 'immense satirical fresco of the French bourgeoisie during the first half of the nineteenth century' Champfleury quoted by Beraldi V 108 is constituted by four major series: Les beaux jours de la vie Moeurs conjugales Le bons bourgeois eighty-two plates 1847-1849 and Tout ce qu'on voudra seventy plates 1847-1851. These display the private lives of the middle class generally as do such shorter albums as Croquis d'expressions fifty-three plates 1838-1839 and Emotions parisiens fifty-one plates 1839-1842" Ray The Art of the French Illustrated Book p. 230.<br /> <br /> "This series of 51 prints is by common consent one of Daumier's best groups of illustrations concerning the diverse feelings of typical Frenchmen." Ramus. Daumier. 120 Great Lithographs p. 125.<br /> <br /> There is some uncertainty as to the number of plates in this scarce work in which Ramus calls for fifty-one lithographs. The confusion comes from the first entry DR 635 in the Daumier Register. This plate was first issued in Le Charivari on October 24th 1839 and was not published in book form until 1843 when it appeared in Album Moeurs Conjugales. To further add to the confusion DR 692 is the same plate as DR 635. The plates in the present volume are numbered one through fifty - so it is fairly safe to assume that our copy with fifty plates the same number of plates as the Morgan Library/Gordon Ray copy is complete as DR-692 and DR-635 were not issued in this volume Les Émotions Parisiennes which was first published in the winter of 1842.<br /> <br /> According to OCLC there is only one copy listed in Libraries and Institutions worldwide The Morgan Library & Museum NY have the Gordon Ray copy with fifty plates although it appears that the plates are not colored and they have erroneously listed the date of publication as 1860. There are a handful of Libraries that in total have tenuncolored plates. ‎Daumier Honore. Daumier Honore. BAISSER LE RIDEAU LA FARCE EST JOUEE. Delteil 86. Lithograph 1834. 8 1/8 x 11 inches; 204 x 280 mm. with wide margins. The penultimate state "sur blanc." A very good dark impression in very good condition except for a 1/4" spot or stain in the right margin about 1/2" outside the edge of the image. From The Daumeier Register: This print shows a masterly interpretation of King Louis-Philippe dressed in the costume of a clown while the theatre curtain falls. With a sardonic smile he points at "Blind Justitia" thereby insinuating Justice to be a farce. At the same time the parliamentarians disappearing in the dark are not living up to their responsibilities to protect the judicial system. The text on this print is a quote of the last words of Rabelais. When he died drunk he said "Draw the curtain the farce is ended". It is interesting to observe that the King was not to take a seat within Parliament but rather in a special box with a curtain towards the plenary. Between 1828 and 1832 Jules de Joly had architecturally redesigned the Chamber of the Palais Bourbon the seat of Parliament in a semi-circular form with upward sloping benches. The entire structure showed similarities to an ancient Roman theatre. Daumier frequently used the obvious parallel between politics and theatre in his drawings. Similar to the English division of power also the French King was not allowed to enter the Parliamentary Chamber under the French constitution. He had to remain "outside" in the Salon du Roi from where he was able to address the Deputies. The text on this print is a quote of the last words of RABELAIS. When he died drunk he said "Draw the curtain the farce is ended". We can assume that this print is referring to a debate of the ministers after the April 1834 riots where measures had been decided which should be taken against the opposition. Most likely this print refers to one of the usual changes of ministries during the early part of the citizen King's reign. The clown Pierrot is the classical personification of traditional pantomime. LA CARICATURE. After the July-Revolution and the reinstatement of the Freedom of the Press Charles Philipon 1800-1862 recognised the growing desire of the public for information.
