FARRARE Claude; FOUQUERAY Charles illustrator.
Jonques et Sampans.
Paris Horizons de France 1945. . First edition one of 525 copies 4to 154 ivpp. 148 colour illustrations including 16 full-page in sheets in original wrappers card chemise and slipcase a fine example. First edition of this beautifully illustrated work limited to only 525 copies. The illustrations printed in a very high quality offer a sharp-eyed account of Charles Fouqueray's voyages from Singapore to Hong Kong Macao and Shanghai. Representing the different shapes of boats in these regions the watercolours also focus on the local sailors and fishermen in action. Fouqueray's use of a large range of colours to depict the sea's various tints and shades conveys a poetic atmosphere to his illustrations signed with his orientalist monogramme. A map at the very beginning of the book represents part of the Asian coast that was explored and drawn by Fouqueray. The French author Claude Farrère 1876-1957 became known for his novels set in exotic places. After a twenty-five year career in the Army he decided to concentrate entirely on writing. Winner of the Prix Goncourt in 1905 for his novel Les Civilisés he was elected chairman of the Academie Française in 1935. Farrère wrote this work on the suggestion of his friend the illustrator Charles Fouqueray who had sent him watercolours made during a trip in Asia. Charles Fouqueray 1869-1956 studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris where one of his masters was the well-known Academic painter Alexandre Cabanel. First interested in painting he then specialised in illustration in particular in news magazines such as Le Monde Illustré and L'llustration. In Jonques et Sampans these two artists convey mixing text and illustrations their personal impressions on the East-Asian navigators ships and waterways. The introductory chapter written by sea captain and author of several naval history books Auguste Thomazi gives a thorough but readable description of the two Chinese boats that compose the title of this work: the junks and sampans. In a very personal and easygoing style Claude Farrère narrates his memories and thoughts about past experiences related to sailing on the East Asian coast. On the original cover are four Chinese characters. They read as translated in French by the publisher L'apparition des voiles and Le clapotis des rames. Paris, Horizons de France, 1945. unknown

FARRERE Claude and D. Ch. FOUQUERAY artist.
Escales d'Asie.
Paris Laborey 1947. 4to. Loose sheets in the original printed and hand-coloured wrappers within the original marbled box with printed label; pp. 134 10 the final 3 blank title printed in green and black and with hand-coloured vignette one map of Arabia with hand-coloured vignette numerous hand-coloured illustrations one double-page size; apart from minimal rubbing to the box a very fine copy. First edition number 122 of 450 copies printed of an extremely rare and beautifully produced work describing the Arabian coast and the Persian Gulf. Frédéric-Charles Bargone who published mainly under the pseudonym Claude Farrère was a French novelist and traveller who had been in the French Navy up to 1919. The artist Charles Dominique Fouqueray official Navy painter since 1908 participated in two Asian voyages in 1921 and 1924. His rich pictorial material resulting from the Arabian part of these voyages is published here for the first time with the text commissioned for this edition. Both artist and writer were perfectly suited for a book on the coastal scenery and navigation of these waters as well as traditional sailing and ship building techniques. The section on the Gulf starts on p. 89 taking up the rest of the volume and includes a little excursion up the Tigris. There are not many books with artistic illustrations of the places on the Western coast of the Gulf. It is also unusual that the book is entirely illustrated in original watercolour over very faintly printed grey and black outlines and shades and not as one would expect from a French mid-century book pochoir-coloured. unknown
