In French. Short description: Gustave Dore. Histoire pittoresque dramatique et caricaturale de la sainte Russie. Paris: J. Bry aine 1854. The French painter Gustave Dor 1832-1883 is known to many primarily as an illustrator of the Bible and works of classical literature. However he was also a talented cartoonist. During the Crimean War when France together with Great Britain and the Ottoman Empire fought against Russia Dor like some other European artists of that era touched on the topic of anti-Russian propaganda in his work. In 1854 his book-album The History of Holy Rus' was published in Paris. It was an anti-Russian military pamphlet in graphic novel format. The album contains over 500 cartoons. All illustrations are provided with comments written by Dore himself. The History of Holy Rus' depicted Russia as a terrible country inhabited by crazy savages. The album was replete with all sorts of propaganda clichs negative clichs stereotypes and myths. The book showed the entire history of Russia from Rurik to the Crimean War in an acutely satirical vein. Dore paid especially close attention to the key figures of Russian history - Ivan the Terrible methodically destroying his own subjects and Peter the Great paving the way for reforms over the mountains of the corpses of his fellow citizens. However Nicholas I his domestic and foreign policy got the most of course. In the Russian Empire History of Holy Rus' for obvious reasons was immediately banned. DORÉ PROOF ILLUSTRATIONS<br /><br />Collection of 29 full-page proof engravings of the drawings by Gustave Doré for the French edition of Michaud's<i> Histoire des Croisades</i> Furne et Jovet 1877. <br /><br />28 engravings are on parchment paper; one is on Japon paper with pencil annotations. Plus proof of title page printed in red on parchment paper with an engraved portrait of Doré. <br /><br />Title page reads: "Croisades Illustrée de 100 Grandes Compositions Gustave Doré. Tome Second. Paris 45 Rue Saint-André-des-Arts 45." The title page coincides broadly with that of the second volume of the Furne edition Leblanc Catalogue de l'oeuvre complet de Gustave Doré p. 240- 241.<br /><br />In all 26 loose folio sheets some double sided approximately 12½ by 17 inches each; engravings measure approximately 8 by 9½ inches. 4 engravings are on the versos. Some are duplicates.<br /><br />An incomplete set of proof engravings for the first print of Michaud's <i>Histoire des Croisades</i> dating back to 1877 at a preliminary stage of the production of this edition. Some of the engravings are more prominent on parchment paper than they are in the published work. Leblanc argues that there were no other French editions of Michaud's work with the Doré illustrations by Furne nor of this format. <br /><br />An interesting example of Doré proof illustrations with clean bright impressions.

Fine letter full of torment in which Gustave Doré dreads being supported again for the rank of officer in the Legion of Honor he who was made chevalier in 1861 after the publication of Dante's Inferno and thanks to Paul Dalloz's intervention. Doré thanks him moreover for this past influence: ""Je viens te remercier encore et du plus profond de mon cur de l'amitié toute dévouée que vous m'avez témoignée dans ces dernières circonstances ; et je t'assure que je te conserve pour ce fait des sentiments aussi reconnaissants que pour le service que tu m'as si spontanément et cordialement rendu il y douze ans."" ""I come to thank you again and from the depths of my heart for the devoted friendship you have shown me in these recent circumstances; and I assure you that I preserve for this fact feelings as grateful as for the service you rendered me so spontaneously and cordially twelve years ago."" Full-length standing portrait of Gustave Doré dressed in white around age 35 wearing moustache and goatee. Very rare photograph of the painter in his youth who was roughly the same age as Carjat. The painter with an absent and detached air almost melancholy in a very dandy pose holds a cigar in his right hand with his left hand slipped into his trouser pocket. Fine print. A copy held by the Musée Carnavalet in Paris but in a much darker tonality. Carjat et Cie unknown
