‎Philadelphia: Gebbie & Co 1880. 8 x 6-1/4 inches. Extensive oxidization and staining. 8 x 6-1/4 inches. Original steel-engraved plates after Doré for a Philadelphia edition of Tennyson's Idylls of the King. The illustrated Doré edition was first published by Moxon in London 1867-8 with 36 steel-engraved plates. Comprising: "The Coming of Aurthur" "Guinevere" "Merlin and Vivien 4" "Balin and Balan" "Gareth and Lynette" "Lancelot and Elaine 3" "Geraint and Enid." We find no record of a Gebbie & Co edition of Idylls of the King. Gebbie did print an edition of Doré's illustrated Don Quixote in 1866 and The Wandering Jew in 1873. Cf. Two volumes bound in contemporary embossed pebbled calf backs with five raised bands and gilt lettering marbled end papers with wide intricate gilt roll-tooled doublures all edges gilt. Very Good Vol.I with hinge open at t.p. front joint opening 2" at top edge 1" tear p.965 at left margin both volumes with wear at at joints edges and corner with loss of leather at corners small tears to calf at spine ends. Still a solidly bound set with none of the heavy foxing this book is prone toa quite clean and lovely set the illustrations especially bright and clean. Folio. 191pp. illustrated with magnificent illustrations by Dore whose marvelous depictions of the squalid metropolis and showing an underside described in part by Dickens and written both by Octavia Hill and General Booth were here made bold by the large size engravings with details that later reprints unfortunately had to reduce ending the boldness of his pen rebacked and re-cornered in brown leather over original maroon cloth raised bands with lettering gilt marbled endpapers and all edges marbled occasional scattered foxing but mostly clean.
