‎REPORT OF THE EVIDENCE IN THE CASE OF JOHN STEPHEN BARTLETT M. D. VERSUS THE MASS. MEDICAL SOCIETY AS GIVEN BEFORE A COMMITTEE OF THE LEGISLATURE AT THE SESSION OF 1839. PRINTED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMITTEE BY ORDER OF THE HOUSE‎

‎Boston: Dutton and Wentworth State Printers 1839. 55 1 blank pp stitched untrimmed light dustsoiling of untrimmed edges. Near Fine except for the absence of wrappers. "5/4 cts Postage" in ink on final blank.

After the Massachusetts Medical Society had expelled him Bartlett sought to revoke the Society's Charter. The case illustrates the early efforts of medical societies to control physicians' treatment of their patients. The Society had tossed Bartlett for praising a physician who the Society contended was a quack. Bartlett said the Society itself "tended to promote quackery." Moreover it sought exclusive privileges for its members and prohibited "consultation with any who do not become members of that body." Witnesses are sworn and testimony presented. Benjamin Franklin Hallett represented Dr. Bartlett.
II Harv. Law Cat. 1012. AI 54294 5. Cohen 14867.50. Dutton and Wentworth, State Printers unknown‎

‎SWITZERLAND. Illustrated in a Series of Views Taken Expressly For This Work by W. H. Bartlett Esq.‎

‎London: George Virtue 1836. 2 volumes. First edition. With steel-engraved vignette title-page in each volume 107 steel-engraved plates by Bartlett with blue-tinted tissue guards and a large folding map in volume 1. 4to very handsomely bound in fine contemporary three-quarter black morocco over marbled-paper covered boards the spines with raised bands elaborately gilt decorated lettered in gilt in two compartments. iv 2 188; 6 152 pp. A very handsome and very well preserved copy the binding in excellent state of preservation the text with essentially none of the usual foxing a couple of the plates a touch dusty at the blank portion of the plate otherwise the plates are very clean and bright essentially pristine and without the normal foxing in all an excellent copy. FIRST EDITION OF AN EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL WORK FILLED WITH PICTURESQUE STEEL ENGRAVED SCENES OF SWITZERLAND. William Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Europe and the East with his good friend Dr. Beattie and brought home over a thousand drawings. Eventually they were engraved and published into volumes with descriptive text by the latter. Here we find one of one of Bartlett's best works partly attributable to the magnificent scenery of the country described. Each engraving combines attention to detail subtle use of lighting and shade and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions.
The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs sights and first hand travel impressions. A somewhat elusive title in the Bartlett oeuvre these illustrations of Switzerland are typical of his best and most famous work. George Virtue hardcover‎

‎Directions for preserving fruit in Squire's Patent Fruit Jar‎

‎New York: printed by A. Penfield 1865. Unfolded booklet 13 x 22.5 cm. 6 pages if folded. John B. Barlett’s business was located at 69 Murray Street New York where he distributed the Squire’s Patent Fruit Jar. “The GREAT SECRET in preserving fruit lies in thoroughly expelling the oxygen and safely sealing therefrom". The Squire’s Jars used a combination rubber band and cork to achieve this. The cover illustration depicts a young woman in the process of canning with a steaming pot on the stove in the background and shelves of finished product in the background implying the efficiency of this method which she is employing. Discoloration of one edge of the leaf effecting the illustration; otherwise very good. OCLC locates one copy in an unnamed collection of culinary ephemera; otherwise not located. [printed by] A.
