Two-volume set. 506pp; 624pp. Octavo 24 cm Original dark green cloth over boards with elaborate gilt-stamped spines and boards ruled in blind. Skillful restoration work to the spine ends and corners of the boards. Volume 2 has a neat tissue repair along the inside margin of p. 623. Each volume has a folding lithographic frontispiece illustration. The extremities are moderately rubbed and the text block of volume 2 is sporadically cracked however the book is still sturdy. A handful of the plates and pages in volume 2 have minor tide marks in the bottom fore-edge corners. Else the pages have scattered light foxing and darkening. The folding map is present with one finely repaired 8" closed tear. The illustrations which should be in Volume 1 at p. 98 and p. 254 are actually present in the second volume. Also as is pointed out in Wright-Howes "only one geyser pl. not two as listed is found in v. 2 that deficiency being made up by an unlisted view of Tucson." Wright-Howes B 197. Wagner-Camp 234:1. Cowan64 p.36 Wagner-Camp 234:1 Graff 198. John Russell Bartlett 1805-1886 a historian and linguist was appointed to oversee the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission to survey and establish the current boundary between the United States and Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo and expanded with the Gadsden Purchase. The survey also determined the route of a southern railroad. Bartlett was also an artist and made illustrations of the southwest landscape. From Wagner-Camp ". Bartlett was a talented artist observer and reporter who contributed greatly to the knowledge of the geography and topography of the Southwest in his Personal Narrative. During three years with the Mexican Boundary Commission he traveled widely from central Texas to the Pacific Ocean and from Mazatlan to San Francisco. A contentious man and lacking perhaps certain administrative skills Bartlett succeeded in antagonizing most of his fellow-official on the Commission. Graff points out that "a number of incidents described by Bartlett have been differently interpreted by his associates." D. Appleton & Company unknown
