Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Tranches marbrées. Rayures sur les plats. Coiffes et mors légèrement frottés. Superbe reliure anglaise. Le tome IV, qui manque souvent, est la traduction d'Un été à Paris, de Jules Janin. On y retrouve, par l'illustration, un Paris Balzacien. On remarquera que le premier volume contient de nombreuses scènes des Pyrénées, très à la mode alors. Un autre volume contient de nombreuses scènes de la Loire (Saumur, Angers, Amboise...). L'ouvrage cherche ainsi à rassembler tout ce qu'on trouve de remarquable en France, aussi bien du point de vue architectural que paysager, l'illustration accompagnant le texte historique et descriptif. La richesse illustrative est remarquable, et on admirera autant le château de Pau que le Panthéon, le cirque de Gavarni que la cathédrale d'Orléans.
