The second volume is from the first edition; the first is a later printing. A nice set of Grandville's masterpiece lampooning contemporary politics and society via his animal-caricatures. The project was spearheaded by Hetzel using the pseudonym P.-J. Stahl who rallied several prominent writers to contribute texts to accompany Grandville's vignettes. The work appeared serially in its original form these volumes are from subsequent book-printings. Grandville executed no fewer than 323 illlustrations the majority being full-page plates. First Edition. "The moving force behind this book was its publisher P.-J. Hetzel who himself contributed many chapters under the pseudonym of P.-J. Stahl�Through Grandville�s animals Hetzel and his colleagues offered a witty and telling commentary on contemporary politics and personalities. Bouchot described the result as the best satire on French manners during the middle of the century recalling "the anger to which it gave rise the outbursts of laughter it provoked and the lawsuits of which it ran the risk." These allusions pass largely unnoticed today but Grandville�s animals remain as amusing as ever thanks to the wit and verve of his compositions. The types and situations he depicts are indeed "of every period and every country." "The final plate shows the artist at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes. He is sketching the visiting creatures who in turn are peering at cages containing Hetzel Balzac Jules Janin and other authors of the Sc�nes de la vie priv�e et publique des animaux. With "Ladies Horticulture; Ladies Botany; and Soliloquy" by Alphonse Karr. Lovely contemporary black leather covers with raised spine bands and very elaborate gilt decoration and lettering. All edges of text block are gilded. Covers show a few scuffs and light rubbing though remains bright and attractive. Front free end leaf is detached though laid in place with chips on edges. Rear end leave is almost detached also with chipping. Scattered foxing and smudges sometimes heavy and affecting some of the plates. A desirable copy of the first edition of Grandville's masterpiece. One of the spectacular surreal illustrated books of the nineteenth century. "In this remarkable book of the boldest possible originality Grandville dared to reveal his dream world to the public" Ray. The illustrations expose an imagination which was unlike anything that appeared in print before. Ray points out that the designs of Grandville certainly influenced Tenniel when he created the characters for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. In this copy all the hand-coloured plates have captions in white letter as per Rebeyrat except for that of the "Bal Masqu�" and "Apocalypse du Ballet" which are in black letter. Despite some staining and foxing to the text pages throught this is still an outstanding copy in a contemporary binding preserving the rare celebrated front and rear wrappers. Exteremely rare thus. 1860. Very good condition. Charming and unusual hand colored engraving from 'Les Fleurs Animes' a collection of 52 illustrations each with an accompanying story having to do with the interesting notion of reversing the comparison of human emotions to flowers. Flowers are represented in human form; here 'Vigne' represents intoxication. The grape vine is depicted as a woman whose dress is made of large grape leaves and whose arms and forehead are encircled with green tendrils. The broken wine bottle and glass in the foreground represent the dangers of drinking. A small 'drinking' bird at the left holds a small glass of wine. 6 1/2 x 10 1/4" <br/><br/> unknown

Two volumes. 4 LXIX i.e. LIX 1 279; 4 319 pp. With a frontispiece of the gigantic Gulliver above an arch 6 section-titles and numerous wood-engraved vignettes by Grandville throughout. 8vo. 210 x 125 mm uniformly bound in contemporary red calf with gilt spine marbled endpapers t.e.g. Paris: H. Fournier Ain� Furne et Cie 1838. First Edition with Grandville's illustrations containing 450 original wood-engraved vignettes which comprise some of his best work. "Swift's text with its pattern of logical development from impossible premises fitted Grandville's mind better than any other to which he applied himself. Each of Gulliver's four voyages had its own kind of appeal for the artist whose compositions remain at a high level throughout" Ray pp. 271-2. Indeed Beraldi claimed that the Voyages de Gulliver became the definitive visual rendering of Swift for French readers and remains one of Grandville's best works. There is scattered foxing throught asseems to be the case with most copies still a more than acceptable copy and also containing the half-titles which are lacking in the Ray copy. Grandville. 4to French text. 667 pp total. 50 hand-colored plates of women personified as flowers 2 hand-colored frontispieces 2 black and white plates and also black and white text illustrations. Probably Grandville's most famous work and one that epitomizes best his fantastical imagination. Plates and text clean and attractive. Quarter red morocco with blindstamped red pebbled cloth covers which perfectly match appears full red leather. Raised spine bands and gilt. Rubbing around gutters and the raised bands and some typical shelfwear besides. Endpapers are a silky moire material and they have some soiling. Gilt foreedges. <br/><br/> Garnier Freres hardcover books

A fine copy of this charming work Grandville's last book of illustrations. It actually consists of two parts each having its own title-page but the parts are always found together. There are fifteen steel engravings by Grandville all with delicate original hand-coloring. Despite occasional minimal foxing the impressions are clean--an unusual state for French books of this type from this period. "The compositions of the `last fairy-tale' brilliantly engraved on steel by Charles Geoffroy and delicately colored form a fitting memorial to Grandville.
