First edition thus. 8vo. xii 232 pp. Publisher's black cloth gilt lettered to the spine Eric Gill's copy inscribed by him in his distinctive hand on the front free endpaper "E.G. Pigotts. Mch 1930 from G.K.'s Weekly for review". Occasional light edge wear and a few marks to the covers else very good. This work by the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain was first published in France in 1920. Gill was purportedly introduced to it by his mentor Father Vincent McNabb and was so taken with it that he produced the first English edition for the St. Dominic's Press in 1923. Translated by Father John O'Connor it was published under the title "The Philosophy of Art". Fiona MacCarthy refers to Gill's involvement in that edition and the profound effect it had on the wider artistic Ditchling community -"When St. Dominic's Press was printing it the brethren tended to congregate around the chapel soon after the nine o'clock sung office and would then discuss the finer points of Maritain all morning." The influence of the work on Gill lasted too. Years later after Gill had moved to Capel-y-ffin and started another artists colony René Hague would refer to "endless talking in particular about Maritain and the philosophy of art". Evan Gill 127. The Press was founded in 1916 by Hilary Douglas Clark Pepler 1878-1951 as a means to advance his ideas for social reform. Influenced by the Distributist movement of Hilaire Belloc and G. K. Chesterton Pepler joined with Eric Gill 1882-1940 and Edward Johnston 1872-1944 in a move to Ditchling Commons to establish a group of working craftsmen. Joined soon afterwards by Desmond Chute 1895-1962 and Joseph Cribb 1892-1967 who was Gill’s earliest apprentice they established the Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic “In order to put the affairs of the above upon a permanent basis.†Though Gill resigned in 1924 and withdrew to Capel-y-ffin to focus on his work as a stone carver the Guild lasted until 1989. In pristine condition.<br/> <br/> This is the deluxe copy of a comprehensive survey of Gill's work as an engraver and typecutter prepared as a labor of love by his nephew Christopher Skelton. Glaister describes Eric Gill 1882-1940 as "an English craftsman engraver type designer sculptor and philosopher whose influence on contemporary book production has been profound and world-wide." Gill studied lettering as a young man under Edward Johnston then for five years beginning in 1905 designed and engraved title pages and initials for books printed by Count Harry Kessler at Insel Verlag Leipzig Kessler would go on to found the Cranach Press in 1913. Later Gill did a great deal of woodcut illustration for other private press publications especially the Golden Cockerel Press including memorable work for the famous "Four Gospels" "Troilus and Criseyde" and "Canterbury Tales". <br /> <br /> The 993 illustrations in the body of the present offering and the 51 in the appendix include all of the wood engravings from those works as well as Gill's other book illustrations individual engravings typefaces Christmas cards and bookplates. The subjects for the most part are either religious or erotic--and sometimes controversially both. The portfolio prints are "A Garden Enclosed" "Self-portrait" "Surrexit Alleluia" "Tree and Dog with Flames" "St. Thomas's Hands" "Girl with a Mirror" "I Am a Little World" and "Man and Woman Embracing." Skelton 1925-92 learned printing from Gill's son-in-law René Hague and operated a private press from 1968 to 1985. This is the magnum opus of that workshop. <br /> <br /> This copy comes from the Garden Collection assembled by Haven O'More with funding from Michael Davis which was the most outstanding library of notable books put together in America in the second half of the 20th century. When it was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1989 the sale brought in $16.2 million. The library included high spots from all periods the four Shakespeare folios the first of "Don Quixote" and Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience" brought in more than $5 million alone and the collection was breathtaking in its impeccable condition. Jerusalem: Jerusalem Type Foundry 1959. Double-folded leaflet 174 x 98mm and three bifolium type specimens 1 slip loosely inserted. Text printed in two colours black and either red blue or green one specimen with an additional alphabet added on a yellow sticker. Loose slip toned. A small collection of type specimens from the Jerusalem Type Foundry of Israel chief among them Gill Hebrew taken from carvings made by Eric Gill in the last years of his life and also including specimen sheets for Mayer-Baruch a lighter version of the 1920s Stam typeface; and Hatzevi and Hatzevi Light. Blue buckram with gilt-lettered spine and bevelled edges. Octavo. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Spine has some light toning and fading. Bookplate of Merle Armitage on front pastedown. Pages untrimmed. Holographic Eric Gill letter written to Merle Armitage and dated 6/3/31 laid in. Gill writes: "I would sign your book for you with / pleasure if you wd. send it. But this / seems a large trouble for so small an / advantage. / Why not cut out the above signature & stick it in" A very good copy and a wonderful association In Art-Nonsense and Other Essays Gill opens with an "apology" to the reader in which he writes "Two primary ideas run through all the essays in this book: 'that art is simply the well making of what needs making' and that 'art is collaboration with God in creating.' Written at various times and for various occasions I was sometimes moved by the one sometimes by the other. One essay will appear in consequence to contradict another. This seems unavoidable but apology is offered for the gymnastics to which the reader is compelled.
