‎[Eric Gill]‎

‎Wood-engravings; Being a selection of Eric Gill's engravings on wood.‎

‎Ditchling Sussex: S. Dominic's Press 1924. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good . Gill Eric. One of 150 copies folio size 40 pp. Eric Gill 1882-1940 English sculptor typographer illustrator and printmaker is perhaps best known for his wood engravings; his work is characterised by sensual line work and elegant characters with a deep spirituality.

This volume appears to be one of the first attempts to compile Gill's work in a single volume; however per Evan Gill's bibliography it "was prepared and published entirely without Gill's knowledge and consent." p. 162. As always seeing Gill's work with the depth and texture of an engraving is so very different from seeing an offset- or digitally-printed version; this work contains a wonderful selection of his early work with his talent already in its full glory.

The work contains a total of thirty-eight of Gill's engravings including those done jointly with David Jones. Note that the list is given on the Contents page but does not call out that there are two engravings on the title page and four on p. 28.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full natural linen cloth over boards title page in red and black with two of the thirty-eight engravings a hand-made notation in the second sentence of the title which apparently was made to all copies as other online listings have the same correction noted limitation statement following the title page issued in an edition of 150 copies this no. 83 each engraving on the rectos only vintage bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown Phillip C. Duschenes New York; binding folio size 12 1/2" by 10" pagination: ii 36 leaves 2 printed recto only.

___CONDITION: Somewhat better than very good the front board clean the corners gently bumped with the linen cloth just beginning to rub a strong square text block with solid hinges and entirely free of prior owner markings; some foxing and a small spot of soil on the back board some foxing throughout and on some pages some marks which appear to be offsetting which fortunately do not intrude upon the engravings. Lacking the very scarce dust wrapper.

___CITATIONS: Taylor & Sewell no. A129; Gill no. 410 which states "thirty-seven engravings" but correctly lists each one of the thirty-eight.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. International customers please note that any taxes duty or tariffs charged by your country will of necessity be your responsibility.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. ‎[Gill, Eric] Pepler, Douglas [that was Harry Douglas Cark (called 'Hilary') Pepler]‎

‎The Devil's Devices or Control versus Service. With Woodcuts by Eric Gill.‎

‎1915. First Edition. London - Hammersmith Published at The Hampshire House Workshops 1915. Octavo. Frontispiece 125 pages with woodcuts throughout the publication. Hardcover / Original publisher's illustrated Hardcover in protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Hilary Pepler also known as Douglas Pepler was born at Eastbourne to a Quaker family and educated at Bootham School. After school he tried several occupations including land surveying the tea trade and engineering. In the early 1900s Pepler moved to Hammersmith London with his wife Clare Whiteman and obtained employment with London City Council in the department of child-care. He developed an interest in social theory and how to improve the lives of working people in the face of industrialisation writing several tracts on the subject. On a practical level he was instrumental in the introduction of free school meals; by any standards a very considerable achievement. His experience of Social Work however left him skeptical as to the ultimate value of such initiatives and most inclined to support self-help as a better means of eradicating poverty. Hammersmith at the time was something of an Arts and Crafts enclave and Pepler became deeply involved in the movement and the socialist politics of Fabianism. He soon became friends with Edward Johnston later meeting Eric Gill. These three formed a close bond spending many hours debating social and artistic issues. Pepler with Susan and Stephen 1916. Notwithstanding Gill’s move to Ditchling in 1907 Pepler continued to develop his ideas and maintained contact. One major initiative that he was involved in was founding the Hampshire House Club in 1907 a working men’s club in Hammersmith with a strong political and didactic agenda. When war broke out the organisation was used as a basis to organise workshop facilities for refugee Belgian craftsmen in a structure not unlike what the Guild was to become. Indeed lessons learnt from this experience were to inform the way the Guild was set up. Another major project for Pepler was writing The Devil’s Devices which was published in 1915 by Hampshire House itself. It is a satire not just opposing capitalism and industrialisation but also Trade Unionism Government and even general education which he sees as an unnecessary distraction in the lives of the working classes. He gives support to the Distributist ideas of small workshops owned by the workers as the preferable mode of economic entity but goes beyond most thinkers by declaring everything else being the work of the devil. What he seems to be proposing borders on a benign form of anarchy with no central provision and his views have obviously moved a long way beyond what could be appropriate for an official with LCC. It is of little surprise that he was by now looking for different employment. Source: The Guild of St.Joseph and St. Dominic hardcover‎

‎London: Published by Paul Jerrard & Son for the Proprietor Messrs. Newbold & Co 1865. Very Good. London Published by Paul Jerrard & Son for the Proprietor Messrs. Newbold & Co. after 1865. Two hand-coloured lithographs individually framed and glazed at a much later date matted just outside the printed border obscuring the series title and plate number above the upper border; visible image sizes approximately 210 × 260 mm; external dimensions 422 × 447 mm. Hand-colouring a little faded; light uneven tanning to the 'Bushrangers' plate; overall in excellent condition but not examined out of the frames. The complete series comprises twelve views of the Australian goldfields in the manner of S.T. Gill; the set 'was probably issued loose without any title or wrapper' Wantrup page 327. The two plates on offer are 'The Lost Bushman or The Unfortunate Digger That Never Returned' Number 2 and 'Bushrangers waiting for the Mails in New South Wales' Number 5. The title is printed beneath the image along with four lines of explanatory text; the 'Lost Bushman' plate also has an additional four lines of verse.
Wantrup suggests a date of publication after the appearance of Gill's 'Australian Sketchbook' in 1865 due to the numerous similarities between the two works. Complete sets of this series and probably individual plates too are clearly rare: Wantrup refers to incomplete sets selling at auction in 1977 and 1982 and the only addition to the book auction records since then is the incomplete set in the 2008 Davidson Collection sale when 11 framed and glazed plates sold for $18640 against an estimate of $6000-8000.
Ferguson 15738b; Wantrup 255. 2 items. ‎1950. England / Ireland c.1950 - 1990. Octavo / Quarto. Hardcover Box / Bespoke made Box labelled "General Gill" for the private library of Prof.David Dave Naylor. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Gill William Daniel 1916–92 geologist was born 29 June 1916 at Hillam Yorks. second child among three sons and three daughters of Richard Wells Gill farmer and Eva Gill née Hesselgrave. He was educated at Castleford Grammar School and Leeds University where he had a successful undergraduate career and received a degree in geology 1938. Robert George Spencer Hudson was his professor and the two men remained close friends for the next thirty years. On leaving Leeds he joined the Attock Oil Company 1938 as a field geologist and palaeontologist. During the second world war he worked as a development geologist and petroleum engineer in India including the Punjab later part of Pakistan and Burma and became a leading expert on Himalayan geology. In 1948 he left the oil industry for academia and a lectureship in geology at Nottingham University. Two years later he was awarded a D.Sc. 1950 by Leeds University for his publications on Himalayan geology and in 1953 he was appointed professor of geology and mineralogy at TCD the first non-Irish holder of the position since 1883. Under his direction and with the aid of funds from the earl of Iveagh qv and oil industry contacts the geology department experienced a period of expansion. A vibrant postgraduate school of research was initiated which led eventually to an increase in staff numbers. The museum building which housed the department was internally reconstructed to include new research and teaching facilities. Unfortunately many of the original museum's historic rock collections were discarded in the move. In Ireland his research interests focused on the Upper Carboniferous rocks of Co. Clare and particularly on the deformation features of soft sedimentary structures so clearly exposed there. He published a significant paper on sand volcanoes with P. H. Keunen 1958 and brought his Clare work together in a later publication of the Geological Survey of Ireland 1979. He was in his element in the field where his enthusiasm for his subject was said to be more eloquent than in the lecture theatre. As oil and mineral exploration was initiated in Ireland in the 1950s he took on the role of consultant and with his students was involved in regional geological mapping. He expanded his consultancy role to oil companies in Libya and Greece and in 1961 resigned from Trinity to accept the chair of oil technology at the Royal School of Mines Imperial College London later becoming professor of petroleum geology 1976. Hudson his original professor replaced him at TCD 1961–6 in the chair of geology. In London Gill introduced the M.Sc. course in petroleum geology and established the first UK-based organic geochemistry laboratory for the study of petroleum-source rocks 1969. He continued to consult with oil companies and governments in Europe the Middle East Africa Australia and Canada. His extraordinary memory and ability to assimilate and synthesise information and data led to successful oil finds in newly explored areas. As a geologist he was most interested in the concepts of large-scale tectonic processes in such places as the Alps the Himalayas and the east African rift. However his impatience with detail meant his publication record never quite kept pace with his achievements. During his career he was elected FTCD 1958 fellow of the Geological Society of London and of the Institute of Petroleum London MRIA 1955 and member of the RDS vice-president 1959 1961. A self-confident and flamboyant man with a large physical presence he is said to have had grandiose plans which did not always come to pass. Known as ‘Dan’ he was popular with both students and staff and was viewed as warm-hearted and straightforward. University politics however were not his strong point. On the death of Hudson 1966 Gill professed an interest in returning to Trinity provided he did not have to submit a formal application form. However TCD did not respond. He married 1946 in India Margaret ‘Betty’ Torrance whom he had met in the Yorkshire dales when he was mapping as a student; they had two daughters. Their houses 16 Garville Avenue Rathgar Dublin and 85 Platt's Lane Hampstead London were the frequent hub of late-night parties where Dan would sing and play the piano. An active sportsman he loved cricket and was president of the Trinity boat and rugby clubs. In 1978 he retired to Glusburn Green Glusburn Yorks. but continued consultancy work in the Middle East for some time afterwards. His wife died in 1987; five years later he died 29 October 1992 in Yorkshire. This Biography was authored by Patricia M. ‎[PÉRIODIQUE SATIRIQUE]. GILL (Louis-Alexandre Gosset de Guines, dit André), [CHAMPSAUR (Félicien), VANIER (Léon)].‎

‎Les Hommes d'aujourd'hui. Portraits-charge. Par A. Gille [et H. Demare]‎

‎Paris, A. Cinqualbre, s.d.

‎[September Press] Gill, Eric, illustrated‎

‎The Four Gospels of the Lord Jesus Christ According to the Authorized Version of King James I with Decorations by Eric Gill Printed and Published at the Golden Cockerel Press‎

‎Wellingborough: Charles Skelton at the September Press 1988. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. One of 600 copies. This is one of 480 unnumbered copies case bound in buckram by The Fine Bindery Limited. This is a nicely produced facsimile of the Four Gospels from the Golden Cockerel Press with illustrations by Eric Gill. The publisher writes in his note at the end of the volume: "This book is a reproduction version of The Four Gospels published in 1931. I call it a reproduction version rather than a facsimile because that is what it is a copy produced by photo-lithography with no attempt to simulate the paper or binding of the original. From the outset the spirit of the book was what I was aiming at. The original is a marvelous book.and rightly regarded as one of the glories of modern book-making.If a reproduction could demonstrate something of the excitement simplicity and ingenuity of the original I would be well pleased." Appearing after the facsimile proper is a six-page account of the making of the original accompanied by four photographic illustrations. This is followed by a brief article on Gill written in 1953 for "The Book Collector" by Robert Gibbings who purchased the Golden Cockerel Press in 1924.

Bound in the original black buckram with a tan leather spine label with gilt title. Minor fading to spine. The text pages are bright and immaculate. Housed in the publisher's natural linen slipcase. In fine condition. Measures 9.25 x 13.25 inches. 269 pages xiv. PRI/121422.
