‎A group of 3 Autograph Letters Signed and 1 Typed Letter Signed "Eric Gill" to Dr. A.C. Jordan about giving a prize of his "Clothes" and regarding a party given by the Men's Dress Reform Party‎

Three letters to Dr. Alfred Charles Jordan 1872-1956 British radiologist co-founder of the New Heath Society and Honorary Secretary of the Men's Dress Reform Party. In the letter of June 9 Gill agrees to present a copy of his book Clothes 1931 at the upcoming revel of the MDRP and says he's asked his publisher Cape to send a copy for him to autograph. In the letter of June 17 he encloses the book and thanks Jordan for tickets to the event saying he will "certainly come . unless run over or in jug." In the letter of July 2 he writes "I did enjoy the evening at Suffolk St. very much. But I was sorry so many of the men were merely in 'fancy' dress." He also accepts Jordan's invitation to have his name added to the organization's permanent committee. Accompanying the group is a Typed Letter Signed of Gill dated May 13 1936 in which Gill requests four issues of the MDRP publication. <br /> <br /> The subtitle of Gill's "Clothes" is "An essay upon the nature and significance of the natural and artificial integuments worn by men and women." In it Gill presents many ideas on dress reform for both men and women among which was his advocacy the skirt or tunic by both men and women a style that Gill himself adopted.<br /> <br /> The Men's Dress Reform Party was active from 1929-1940 and grew out of discussions within the Clothing Subcommittee of the New Health Society which had been co-founded by Dr. Jordan in 1925. Printed by Robert Gibbings at the Golden Cockerel Press. Buckram 20x12cms. Gill first published his reflection on art and Christianity in the journal Blackfriars: A Monthly Review Edited by the English Dominicans in October 1924. An author's note in the present volume reveals that this reprint allowed for an expansion of Gill's theories which 'were formerly excluded in deference to puritan prejudice by editorial prudence.' He clarifies that these changes included the addition of section five 'Clothes and Nakedness'. Long involved in the reintegration of craft i.e. humanity and industry Gill's conversion to Catholicism in 1913 introduced a strictly spiritual approach to both his art and writings. In the present volume Gill explored the act of creation as an act of love and worship. The volume includes six engravings which are exceptional examples of Gill's proficiency in the medium. Four engravings are explicitly religious including a crucifixion and the inclusion of the hand of God.One print For dignity and adornment juxtaposes a 'pre-industrial' couple with a flapper and a tuxedoed man. The work accompanies Gill's criticism of contemporary fashion 'The clothes of to-day clearly show that man has forgotten his dignity and he has forgotten his dignity because he has forgotten his Love.'. Bookplate belonging to Eleanor and Reginald Jebb adhered at front paste down. Interior otherwise unmarked. Includes a letter from Gill to previous owner Eleanor Jebb hand-written and signed by Gill on letterhead from Pigott's North Dean High Wycombe; dated February 1931. The letter had been torn and has been reconstructed by pasting its pieces onto a different piece of paper; this has been tipped-in by a previous owner at half title. Additional correspondence between Mrs. Jebb and Gill's wife Mary and with Fr. Vincent McNabb is laid-in at the back. ‎London: Jonathan Cape N.d. but 1940. Proof copy. Two volumes. 8vo. 160; 161-283 5 pp. Original plain blue wrappers with printed titles early manuscript to both front covers giving the page numbering of the respective volumes with loosely inserted a stamped and postmarked postcard from Eric Gill to Professor Henry Harris of St. John's College Cambridge with the college address crossed out and a local forwarding address added in purple pencil. Wear to the spine ends very good. A proof copy issued before illustrations were added unusually bound in two volumes given the size of the work. The postcard features a photographic illustration of the Skirrid Mountain Inn Llanvihansel on the recto and is postmarked Abergevenny 16th September 1939. Gill who dated the card two days earlier mentions that he is "on the road to Capel-y-ffin having a drink in this pub". He then goes on to express remorse for not seeing Harris to say goodbye but hopes "to return before very long to do 3 key stones". He closes by stating "'Birmingham' seems to be maintaining itself." Gill's correspondent was Henry Albert Harris then Chair of Anatomy at Cambridge University and a Professorial Fellow of St. John's College. It has not been possible to establish the connection between the two but given the informal tone in which the card has been written there was clearly a degree of warmth and familiarity to the relationship. ‎Villa des Palmiers Salies-de-Béarn France 1927. 2 pp. in green ink. 4to. Some wrinkling closed tear to blank margin slight toning old folds. 2 pp. in green ink. 4to. Gill writes to his friend J.G. Wilson of the Bumpus Bookshop in London regarding his engraving "Flying Buttresses" mentioning his work on Troilus & Criseyde for the Golden Cockerel Press and mentioning another of his publishers. An excellent technical letter with 5 small drawings in the text. In part: "I am working like anything on the engravings for the Golden Cockerel Troilus & Criseyde. I expect to finish the engravings by about Easter . I shall come and see you as soon as possible to talk over things and explain how it happened that D. Cleverdon is publishing my next . Meanwhile this is just to make a brief apology for myself in the matter of the Buttresses! Is matter of fact they aren't so blooming wrong in the engraving as your correspondent thinks. It's the perspective which makes the difficulty." The engraving in question is "Flying Buttresses" based on a drawing of St. Pierre Chartes used to illustrated Gill's 1926 essay "Id Quod Visum Placet." Gill uses the rest of the letter to explain with the aid of five small sketches why the perspective is in fact correct. Douglas Cleverdon the Bristol bookseller and publisher brought out Gill's Art and Love in 1927 as well as a collection of his engravings in 1929. unknown‎
