‎Adelaide: E.S. Wigg 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Adelaide E.S. Wigg 1890. Oblong quarto 19 leaves all rectos blank comprising the gilt-pictorial title page by E.C. May 14 full-page tinted lithographic views with tissue-guards the 3-page list of 181 subscribers and the key to plate 5 between plates 4 and 5. Original gilt-decorated half maroon morocco and gilt-lettered brown cloth slightly rubbed at the extremities and lightly bumped on the rear corners; cloth lightly flecked; inner hinge a little loose at the title page; minimal light foxing; essentially a fine copy. Ferguson 9924e but we have seen any number of bindings identical to ours and none as described by Ferguson. He also states that 'The Mitchell Library copy has a pencil note: 200 printed in George Robertson's hand-writing'. In spite of this comment and the 181 subscribers' names in our experience the book is not as rare as these figures would suggest. The fact that this item is essentially the same as Ferguson 9807 with the Galbraith imprint under the gold blocking carrying the Wigg imprint and the Wigg binder's label on the rear pastedown leads us to suspect that the answer has something to do with this change of publisher after the book was printed. ‎Hubard Gallery Silhouette Broadside an employer of S. T. Gill‎

‎London: H. Holder Printer George Lane 1830. The Hubard Gallery 1822 to ca. 1845 was the namesake of William James Hubard 1807 - 1862 a young British prodigy with great talent in cutting likenesses out of black paper who by age fifteen was commissioned to cut the silhouettes of the Duchess of Kent. His talent was exploited in Britain by a neighbor named Smith; Smith took Hubard to Boston in the mid 1820s and Hubard eventually struck out on his own. Smith continued with other silhouette artists representing the Gallery. There is no complete list of artists employed by the Hubard Gallery but the noted artist Samuel Thomas Gill Australia the Irish profilist W. G. Wall and E. G. A. Norman Australia are known to have worked with the Gallery in Dublin in the early 1840s. Broadside with full length wood block silhouette of man in top hat and tails holding a cane or shillelagh in his right hand advertising the silhouette work of the Hubard Gallery. Below the wood block silhouette text describes the Gallery's London stay: "Johnny Milburn A Few Days Longer at Mr. London's Hairdresser High Street. Extraordinary press of Business during the last week at the Hubard Gallery to obtain Likenesses in the peculiar and forcible Style of the Artists will oblige them to remain a Few Days Longer". The silhouette is indeed peculiar and forcible with the subject a bit rumpled and short in stature but trying to appear the gentleman. Further text provides the prices for a likeness with highly finished drapery at two shillings six pence; or in a neat frame with glass one shilling. Publisher's Description: "Coexistence In the summer of 2010 I was asked if I would be interested in making a photographic response to an area containing a pond situated within an industrial wasteland � the remains of the deceased steelmaking industry in Dudelange Luxembourg. My only previous experience with ponds had been during my teenage years when an obsession with pond life led me to spend long hours in my bedroom wearing a lab coat and peering into a microscope. That obsessive immersion into a strange and disorientating world had a profound effect on me personally and certainly left its mark on many of the photographic studies I have subsequently produced. I knew that the pond in Dudelange would be teeming with unseen life now that its industrial past had come to an end. From the 1920s until it was put out of use in 2006 the pond had been used to cool the blast furnaces and tiny but dense communities would be now forming and thriving in the absence of that extreme heat. For the eight months leading up to my first visit to the territory my mind increasingly started tuning into microscopic worlds within worlds and I became ever more aware of the many parallels between patterns and processes in the pond and those in our own lives as individual humans within societies. Slowly I became committed to the idea of attempting to bring these two apparently disparate worlds � so physically close yet so different in scale � visually closer together. Grappling with the idea of knitting together these parts of life that coexist but don�t belong together nor are ever usually seen together I decided to make a photographic study that would resemble a kind of tapestry. The University of Luxembourg kindly taught me to use one of their medical microscopes so that I was able to study single drops of the water and I began searching the pond for diatoms and other minuscule creatures and plant life. The more I thought about the human factor that was so essential to the series forming in my head the more I wanted to involve local people from the small town of Dudelange which has a substantial community of families with Portuguese and Italian origins. Many of these people used to work in the steelmaking industry. For health and safety reasons it was not possible to invite people to come to the cooling ponds so I decided instead to take the pond to the people. I filled a red plastic mop bucket with water from the pond and dipped my underwater camera into this pond water prior to making portraits of the Dudelange residents.
