The Peripheral Centre: Voices from India`s North East
Cambridge University Press/ Zubaan 2010. Hardcover. New. When Thangjam Manorama was arrested and killed by the Assam Rifles in July 2004 in Manipur it unleashed a protest likes of which no one had witnessed before. This was one of the triggers for this collection - to provide a space for women and men from the `Northeast` to tell us about the issues that confronted them daily to talk about the pressures the insecurities the uncertainties confronting them in an area that has been facing low intensity warfare for decades. The anger and the frustrations of the Manipuri women who staged that dramatic protest after Manorama`s killing have in many ways been vindicated. Each essay in this book brings to mind that troubling image each contributor points to the Manipuri women holding them up as a flag of rebellion of protest of questioning. Each essay questions issues of nation identity of what makes the people of the Northeast so alienated from the `mainstream`. Many contributors are writers academics or activists from the Northeast but there are many like the editor `outsiders`. The Peripheral Centre: Voices from India's Northeast
New Delhi India: Zubaan 2010 The last few decades have witnessed growing theoretical and practical concerns with intersections between violent conflict and development. Links between poverty and natural resources have been minutely explored and attention has also been given to how state collapse and bad governance have contributed to violent conflict. However gender relations and ideologies have often been overlooked in theorization of these interconnections as well as in designing development strategies meant to mend the devastating impact that war leaves on a society. This book looks at the intersections between development practice and violent conflict from an explicit gender perspective and situates the fields of inquiry within a global condition of neo-liberal economy and militarism. Using the notions of femininity and masculinity as analytical tools contributors question theoretical political and policy approaches pertaining to specific development strategies in times of prolonged violent conflict transitions to peace and post-conflict periods. They further analyse various social cultural economic and political processes and relations of power that impact upon different groups of women men and children in the contexts of militarization and violence. The Female Supernatural Being in Contemporary Gothic Literature and Film
KW Publishers 2014. Hardcover. New. This paper was originally prepared in partial fulfillment of the requirements for an MA degree in contemporary English literatures from Leeds Metropolitan University. The work is heavily focused on supernatural elements in the relevant texts examined here with an emphasis on the female supernatural being and her evolution in both literature and film. Psychoanalytic examination and a close analysis of the relationships between supernatural elements and the current social scenario are used to provide a few possible explanations for both the purpose and need for the changing role of the female supernatural being in contemporary fiction. One example is the analysis of the eponymous and possibly spectral character in Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Whilst the treatment of race and racism has been studied by a number of critics this paper is an attempt to bring focus on the portrayal of the feminine and masculine mother–daughter duality and the fading boundaries between past and present through a feminine form. Other works examined in this paper include Kim Harrison’s Dead Witch Walking Stephen King’s Carrie and the films The Exorcist and An American Haunting. This paper is in no way a complete and a thorough study of the female supernatural in contemporary fiction. It is an attempt to study and speculate on the female occult in the selected texts and films with the aim of providing a few ideas on the purpose behind the changing roles and image of a popular group of fictional characters. Contents:- Abstract Acknowledgements Introduction 1. The Supernatural Female in on Temporary Female Gothic Literature 1.1 Sethe and Beloved in Toni Morrison’s Beloved 1.2 Rachel Morgan in Kim Harrison’s Dead Witch Walking 2. The Female Other in Male Gothic Literature 2.1 Female Vampires in Stoker’s Dracula and Le Fanu’s Carmilla 2.2 Stephen King’s Carrie 3. The Shepherd Lies
KW Publishers 2010. Hardcover. New. Betrayal flavours all. There is nothing more to be said about the one who walks our darkest alleys that each of these poems don’t already whisper of. They’re near-silent but listen to their dark hues that spread light on every form of this ever-black atrocity. We try to forget that it lurks: a mist that weakens takes and breaks parts of us into shards sharp enough to tear away the rest. Broken promises wrong directions purple lies soiled signs and shattered crayon-dreams. Love is always a victim you see she likes attention so her pain is well known. But there are those that dwell in the intricacies of our minds that also fall prey to the dark. Friendship: has he never been bruised Or even hope whose wings tempt the liar the thief and the mother of doubt Courage can soon enough be proven a fool and joy: an idiot. But the one who bleeds more often than not is the mirror’s portrait. Think about it: how often have you lied to you The Shepherd Lies. Oh yes he does and we know it. Someone is to bleed and though we know that too we forget that we are all soft bleating lambs in masquerade. No one is safe and the axe strikes fast each time carving away a precious piece that only then we realise we needed. Each poem has a story to tell. How you taste the words is for you to decide. I can only hope that the muse is satisfied with what she writes through my insignificance. But do tell: Do they speak to you Can you see it too Or has the Shepherd tainted your canvas little lambContents 1. All Grown Up 2. All Your Wolf… 3. Bad Glass 4. Beautiful Corpses 5.
