Tales of A Financial Frontiersman; Sixty Years: 1952-2011
Privately Published In Maryland on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay 2012. Hardcover. Good/Good. 602 6 pages. Illustrations. Index. DJ has some sticker residue at back near barcode. Minor wear to blue endpapers and color transfer to end pages. Foreword by Dean LeBaron. From the Back Cover -- Financial frontiersman In the early 1950s many called financial markets in particular stock markets a form of Wild West. And the farther away from home the wilder they could be. This book provides a front row account of the unimaginable makeover of our financial system since the Second World War. As a young inexperienced investment banker in Canada David Gill's bosses considered his ideas and schemes "wild" . and the same when he had an opportunity to put the lessons of those early years into practice in Washington DC as an international bureaucrat. It turned out that the conventional ideas missed the point of the massive changes that were underway in which the "frontier" went from irrelevant periphery to critical mainstream. In the words of Dean Acheson David felt lucky to be "present at the creation" and have the opportunity to see the experiments and initiatives he undertook at the International Finance Corporation IFC come to fruition. This is about the reengineering of the financial world; about the people involved; about the struggle against the many supporters of the status quo in many countries and markets; and about David's perspective and role in all of this. Why Reagan Won; A Narrative History of the Conservative Movement 1964-1981
Chicago IL: Regnery Gateway 1981. Presumed First Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Very good/good. xvii 1 256 2 pages. Index. Nice long inscription on fep signed by Bill Gill. DJ has some wear soiling and edge tears. Foreword by William F. Buckley Jr. Introduction by Senator Paul Laxalt. William J. Gill was an author journalist and television producer who covered Washington D.C. for decades. Frederick Clifton White Sr. known as F. Clifton White or Clif White June 13 1918 - January 9 1993 was an American political consultant and campaign manager for candidates of the Republican Party the New York Conservative Party and some foreign clients. He is best remembered as the moving force behind the Draft Goldwater Committee from 1961 to 1964 which secured a majority of delegates to nominate U.S. Senator Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona the first modern conservative presidential candidate since Calvin Coolidge. White was credited with organizing highly effective grassroots operations in the states that secured enough delegates for a surprising Goldwater victory on the first ballot at the 1964 Republican National Convention held in San Francisco. White's team bested the better-funded Eastern Establishment campaigns of New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton and several others. In 1968 White guided Ronald Reagan's brief presidential campaign. At the time Reagan had been governor of California for fewer than two years. Reagan came in third at the 1968 Republican National Convention held in Miami Beach Florida with 182 delegates behind Rockefeller and first-ballot winner Richard M. Nixon the former Vice President of the United States. Back in New York White managed the 1970 campaign of James L. Buckley brother of the journalist William F. Buckley Jr. for the U.S. Senate on the Conservative Party line. Once in the White House in 1981 President Reagan named White as the director of Radio Marti which broadcast pro-U.S. programming to communist Cuba. Regnery Gateway hardcover

Carter Robert Randolph and Gill Harold B Editor and Young Joanne Editor
Searching for the Franklin Expedition: The Arctic Journal of Robert Randolph Carter
Annapolis MD: Naval Institute Press 1998. First edition/First printing. Hardcover. Very good. No dust jacket. Sewn binding. Paper over boards. 8 201 7 p. Illustrations. Notes. Glossary. BIbliography. Index. The journal of a crewman from the 1850 American rescue expedition sent to discover the fate of the 1845 Royal Navy Arctic expedition under the command Sir John Franklin. The bulk of the book is taken up with Carter's account o the year-long expedition. From an on-line encyclopedia posting: "Carter was born on September 15 1825 at Shirley the Charles City County plantation of his parents Hill Carter 1796 1875 and Mary Braxton Randolph Carter. In 1839 he and a younger brother enrolled in the first class to enter the new Episcopal High School in Alexandria. On March 30 1842 at age sixteen he joined the United States Navy as a midshipman and began a tour of duty that lasted six years. After initial assignment aboard the frigate Constitution Carter sailed to the West Indies in August 1843 on the sloop of war Falmouth. During the Mexican War he served on the Savannah in the Pacific Squadron. Carter returned to Shirley in July 1848 and later that year entered the United States Naval School at Annapolis in 1850 renamed the United States Naval Academy. In 1849 he graduated as a passed midshipman. During the next decade Carter joined three naval expeditions of scientific exploration and surveying. In May 1850 he set sail as acting master aboard the brig Rescue one of two ships that the New York merchant Henry Grinnell fitted out to assist the British search for Sir John Franklin whose expedition to find the fabled Northwest Passage had not been heard from since July 1845. The navy took charge of Grinnell's expedition and prepared for its first mission to the Arctic seas. The voyage lasted about eighteen months during which time Carter kept a private journal that is the only full daily account of the failed rescue attempt. He was candid in his assessment of the expedition and its leadership and his drawings further documented his experiences. The diary appeared in print in 1998. By the autumn of 1851 Carter was safely back in New York City. Following a brief courtship he married Louise Humphreys on January 6 1852 in Annapolis. They had two daughters. After a year's duty on the naval academy's Preble Carter served from 1853 to 1855 as junior lieutenant and navigator on the flagship Vincennes whose expedition exploring and mapping the China Sea the northern Pacific Ocean and the Bering Strait was the navy's hydrographic counterpart to Matthew Calbraith Perry's diplomatic mission to Japan. Afterward Carter returned stateside and was stationed at the Norfolk Navy Yard for two years. In 1858 he began a two-year tour of service aboard the steamer Argentina on an exploration of La Plata River and its tributaries in South America. Carter was in Washington D.C. preparing reports on the expedition along La Plata when the Virginia convention met to discuss secession from the Union. He resigned from the United States Navy on April 2 1861 and on June 10 joined the Confederate States Navy as a lieutenant and was assigned to the steam tender Teaser an armed tug deployed at Jamestown Island on the James River. Ordered the next year to duty aboard the Richmond he was promoted to first lieutenant on October 23 1862 to rank from October 2 of that year. In April 1863 he sailed to Europe to aid Confederate agent James D. Bulloch in equipping ships and purchasing supplies and became a valued assistant. Later Carter commanded the blockade runner Coquette operating between Bermuda Nassau and the Atlantic ports. At Bulloch's request Carter was ordered back to England and arrived in Liverpool on September 28 1864. He was assigned to the French-built ironclad Stonewall outfitted in Copenhagen but the Civil War ended before he arrived in United States waters. The Stonewall surrendered to Cuban authorities and Carter returned to England where he obtained a British master's certificate and joined the British mercantile marine. At the urging of his father Carter returned to Virginia and received a presidential pardon on. Naval Institute Press hardcover
