1885 1885 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Authors. A presentation copy of 'Work and Adventure in New Guinea' written by missionaries who visited their in the mid to late nineteenth century. James Chalmers and William Wyatt Gill were both British missionaries who travelled to New Guinea to work. This book is about their experiences during the 1877 to 1885 period that they were there. Chalmers wrote three other books about his experience as a missionary in New Guinea 'Adventures in New Guinea' 'Pioneering in New Guinea' and 'Pioneer Life and Work in New Guinea 1877-1894'. Chalmers had been eager to start missionary work originally setting out to Rarotonga but found that the island had already been partially Christianised by former missionaries. His work in New Guinea was a subject of pride for him and after a year's leave at home he returned in 1888. Gill had been discouraged from missionary work by his peers but was determined to become a missionary. He original set out in 1851. He spent the rest of his life in Australia working as a missionary. Collated incomplete as lacking the front endpaper front free endpaper half-title page frontispiece and pages 13/14 27/28 87/88 and 213/214. Undated dated using Copac. Condition: In the original publisher's pictorial cloth binding. Externally sound. Slight rubbing to the spine and boards has caused some discolouration. Minor rubbing to the joints. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor mark to the rear board. Front hinge is starting but firm. Lacking the front endpaper front free endpaper half-title page and frontispiece. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean throughout with just the odd spot. Lacking pages 13/14 27/28 87/88 and 213/214. Overall Condition: Good. 1885 hardcover
