‎Paris: Bingham Collin Goupil et Michelez 1880. First Edition . Hardcover. Near fine. Tall folio 2 volumes illustrated. Measuring about 36cm x 50cm 14" x 19.5". Near fine in contemporary full cyan-blue crushed morocco with elaborate patterned silk endpapers and doublures gilt borders top edge gilt. Spines faded to deep green/brown though the gilt titling and stamping remains about 80% bright. Just a hint of rubbing to the joints but really a well-preserved set housed in what are likely contemporary blue cloth slipcases worn at the extremities and somewhat tender but structurally sound. A magnificent production; presenting ninety-five works of fine art in major French collections of the period reproduced photographically by major photographers of the period. Each photograph is mounded to heavy handmade paper and then matted with the same paper stock. Each is protected by a tissue guard which includes the printed name of the artist and the work below a few tissue guards are partly torn or creased but nearly all are pristine. Very little in the way of bibliographical information is provided in the published book; there is no date or place of publication nor is the handsome elaborate binding signed. The surnames of the four photographers noted on the title page are reasonably easy to locate however; "Bingham" is certainly Robert Jefferson Bingham a pioneer of the collodion process who built a successful career in Paris on his ability to photograph works of art. According to Monovisions Magazine "Bingham's reproductions of paintings were famed for their suggestion of the original colours in the black-and-white photographs and were lauded as being far superior to all other similar efforts until then." "Goupil" is either Adolphe or Albert Goupil of Goupil et Cie. a Paris firm which specialized in the reproduction of fine art. "Michelez" is Charles-Louis Michelez a well-known contemporary of Bingham's involved in the same occupation. "Collin" is somewhat difficult to track down but could possibly be Raphael Collin the notable painter and ceramicist who would have traveled in this orbit and may have taken on some photography work to supplement his meager artist's living. This of course is mere speculation on our part. Auction records for this set are very scant; the most recent sale was in 1915 and we found two earlier; in 1912 and 1894. Each sale was that of a distinguished collector of fine books and prints. Curiously despite broad attempts to locate library holdings we could not find any in OCLC.
