Un volume broché in-8 (20 x 14,5 cm), couverture souple illustrée d'une composition originale en noir, plastique de protection, quelques piqûres marginales à la couverture, petite déchirure de cm en tête à la charnière. 34 pages, illustrations in et hors-texte, papier jauni comme souvent pour cette édition, quelques erreurs de pagination concernant les publicités de l'éditeur en fin de catalogue. Édition originale de ce catalogue important documentant l'oeuvre de Steinlen de 1894 à 1903. La préface est signée par son ami Anatole France, qui souligne le rôle de l'artiste comme témoin social de son temps. L'ouvrage contient de nombreuses illustrations in-texte et à pleine page, représentatives du style naturaliste et engagé de l'artiste : scènes de rue, ouvriers, nus et ses célèbres chats. Joint : Le rare carton d'invitation original pour l'inauguration de l'exposition le mardi 5 décembre à la Galerie Pelletan (125, boulevard Saint-Germain), illustré de deux bandeaux gravés de Steinlen. Bon exemplaire de cette édition originale sur papier courant, en assez bon état.

Notre exemplaire est une des très rares épreuves imprimées sur papier Japon, toute petite trace de punaisage dans l'extrémité de la marge supérieure droite (Our plate is one of the few copies printed on Japanese paper. Original plate in good condition). LES MAITRES DE L'AFFICHE, prestigieuse publication d'art, éditée par l'atelier de lithographie Chaix, dont la parution s'étala de décembre 1895 à novembre 1900. Chaque livraison comportait 4 planches de reproduction en chromolithographie d'une remarquable qualité d'impression des plus belles affiches illustrées des grands artistes français et étrangers (auxquelles il faut ajouter 16 planches de lithographies originales offertes en prime aux abonnés). Lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, fut organisée la première exposition rétrospective dévolue à l'affiche, celle-ci devait valider la reconnaissance officielle d'appartenance de l'affiche au monde de l'art. Jules Chéret (1836-1932) y sera sacré '' Maître de l'affiche '', c'est aussi à cette date que Seurat commencera à collectionner les affiches de Chéret. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by an excerpt from Germinie Lacerteux by the Goncourts. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appear in total covering the major artistic movements of the late nineteenth century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints is published in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also provides a confidential printing of very high luxury: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but indeed to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a fine printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters amplifies at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invents the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then becomes an art object and its ephemeral support becomes precious and devoted to conservation. Piazza decides to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and to elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. Le Chat noir was a weekly magazine founded by Rodolphe Salis and Emile Goudeau published from 1882 to 1897 intended to promote the famous cabaret of the same name which it sought to commemorate. It published the texts recited during the performances and stands as a major literary and artistic document of late 19th-century bohemian life and the distinctive Parisian vitality of the era.
