Paris 1895. Very good condition. Adolphe Willette printed offset proof of a book jacket with illustration of cabaret performer playing the accordion and a battle scene at the front panel. Signed in the plate at lower right with dedication "A mon camarade Jules Jouy". Advertisement for other publications at rear panel. Willette 1857-1926 was a French caricaturist painter lithographer and architect of the Moulin Rouge whose many works in the illustrated press Le Pied de Nez le Courier Francais and Le Rire often appeared under various pseudonyms. He was active during the Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau period and was a member of the Cornet Society a group of artists musicians writers academics and playwrights who gathered at various restaurants around Montmartre. Known for his lithographs posters paintings and illustrations Willette was called the "Pierrot of Montmartre" because of his fascination with this comedia del'arte character. Willette's famous 'Parce Domine' painting with many Pierrot figures first decorated the Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir; it is now at the Montmartre Museum. Ayant pour rédacteur en chef Emile Goudeau ce journal à la parution annoncée le vendredi ce qui ne fut pas toujours le cas comprend des poèmes des publicités des petites nouvelles mais sa valeur réside dans les illustrations exclusivement réalisées par Willette. Quelques rousseurs et petites déchirures des bordures sans incidence sur le texte ni l'image. Adolphe Willette est indissociable du quartier Montmartre dont il décora de nombreux cabarets bistrots et le fameux Moulin Rouge. Peintre tout d'abord il exposa au Chat Noir après avoir participé à sa création. Par la suite il collabore à de nombreux journaux comme le Rire ou l'Assiette au beurre avant de fonder le Pierrot. Personnage controversé il se présenta comme candidat antisémite aux élections législatives de 1889 à Paris. Il fut le premier président de la République de Montmartre association philanthropique destinée à aider les enfants du quartier. unknown

Cartella edit. in piena tela blu (cm. 35x27), ill. in argento impressa al piatto raffigurante un Pierrot impiccato. La cartella contiene 41 tavv. in fotoincisione stampate su carta vergellata (le tavole non sono numerate), 1 grande manifesto in cromolito (qualche strappo restaurato) + 1 fac-simile di una pagina manoscritta su carta di Cina. Adolphe-Léon Willette (Chƒlons-sur-Marne 1857 - Parigi 1926) fu pittore, illustratore, caricaturista e litografo francese. Collocò Pierrot su un nobile piedistallo tra gli eroi immaginari di Francia e questa pubblicazione ne è forse il più valido esempio illustrando il lato più charming dell'amore, spesso puro e a volte non necessariamente materialistico.
