Merton College Library built 1371-78 retains its 1502 timber roof and metal bosses; England's first stalled library. Charles Latham was one of the most influential architectural photographers of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods renowned for his evocative images of country houses and formal gardens across Britain and Italy. His work helped define the visual language of architectural publishing and preservation. His first major commission was for J. Alfred Gotch's Architecture of the Renaissance in England 1894 from which this photograph is taken where his collotype plates captured the texture and grandeur of Elizabethan and Jacobean houses with remarkable clarity. Latham later helped shape the visual identity of Country Life magazine which we always have in stock photographing both historic estates and newly built homes. His images became central to the magazine's appeal combining editorial elegance with technical innovation in print reproduction. Each of Charles Latham's architectural photographs captures a singular moment of craftsmanship patronage or domestic ambition from heraldic chimney-pieces to formal garden fronts. Whether collegiate civic or aristocratic these buildings speak to the stylistic confidence of their age. Many remain inhabited studied or preserved today making each image not just a historical record but a quietly resonant portrait of continuity. Published in 1894 this fine Victorian-period image has been carefully removed from Gotch's monumental work. Printed in Leipzig Germany by Sinsel & Co. on thick cream-coloured paper this image reflects the firm's hallmark clarity and tonal depth featuring the building's name in sepia ink below a ruled border with Latham's beautifully composed black-and-white photograph taking centre place. It is a rare species, but it exists, as '60s art critic Pascal Renous pointed out on the subject of artistic couples. This designer-decorator duo of Janine Abraham and Dirk-Jan Rol met at Jacques Dumond's studio in 1955. The couple shares the same love of precision, line and plain colours. Their earliest joint creations were first exhibited at the Salon des artistes decorateurs, in Paris. Their furniture, made of wicker, wood and aluminium, twice won prizes at the Salon des artistes decorateurs (a sideboard in 1956 and an armchair in 1958), garnering notice from the public and professionals alike. Jean Royere did not hesitate to use their emblematic Soleil armchair (gold medal at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair) in the decoration of the palace of the Shah of Iran, in Teheran. Their light and functional designs are available today, re-edited by Yota Design. Abraham & Rol were also interior designers and intervened in this capacity for both individual clients and large corporate clients, such as Yves Rocher and Saint-Gobain, with the same precision and sense of composition that define their furniture pieces. Finally, the couple also expressed their creativity through architecture, their mastery of this discipline enabling them to design some twenty houses from the 1960s through the 2000s in the Ile-de-France region. Their homes are genuine inhabited sculptures, of which certain have become truly emblematic.

The first edition of this work was published 1924-27. It was instantly recognised as the primary reference on the evolution of English furniture from the Middle Ages to the Late Georgian period. It was consistently in demand and soon went out of print. The Second Edition, published in 1954, was entirely revised and enlargedby one of the two original collaborators, Ralph Edwards, who at that time was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was an outstanding authority, well placed to produce such a mammoth revision. The Dictionary is, within its chronological limits, a comprehensive survey of the whole wide field of English domestic furniture. Later research has added details but the basic body of knowledge remains unchallenged. It remains the standard book referred to in all sale catalogues
