Dutch East India Company; China
The Effigies of Mr. Jno. Nieuhoff. Portrait
London: Churchill 1701. Very good condition. An engraved frontispiece portrait of Johann Nieuhoff an official of the VOC and important writer and illustrator of contemporary China whose study of China was produced in 1665 by his brother Hendrick and titled 'An embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to the Grand Tartar Cham emperor of China: . at his imperial city of Peking wherein the cities towns villages ports rivers &c. in their passages from Canton to Peking are ingeniously described by John Nieuhoff; '. The work was essential to European understanding of China as it was the only reliable source along with the reports of the Jesuits of information and images available at the time. The work was translated into French German Latin and English and was the first to include 150 true to life illustrations drawn by Nieuhoff himself. In 1649 he joined the East India Company first in Batavia and then in China as steward at the embassy which aspired to gain trading rights with China's southern coast. His specific duties were to observe all "farms towns palaces rivers . and other buildings" that he might encounter drawing them "in straight form and figure" as well as remains of the historical victory of the "Tartars" Manchus that brought an end to the reign of the Ming dynasty. He remained in China until 1657. Nieuhoff wears an elaborate costume and holds a rolled sketch in his right hand; in the background is a sailing ship. 7 x 11 1/4" on paper 7 3/4 x 12"

Churchill unknown

Dutton Michael
Policing Chinese Politics: A History
8vo, br. ed. In the first line of his Selected Works, Mao Zedong states, "Who are our enemies, who are our friends, that is the question germane to the revolution." In Policing Chinese Politics, Michael Dutton argues that this friend/enemy dichotomy structured Chinese social order for much of the twentieth century, and the functioning of the Chinese police reflected this. Unlike western policing, which grew out of community efforts to control crime, modern Chinese policing--born in war and revolution--was founded to defend the Communist Party. Analyzing empirical evidence including extensive material from Chinese Public Security sources, Dutton tells the political history of modern China through the history of its policing practices. The deeply political character of the Chinese police was established in the 1920s, when the Communists were fighting against Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists. Despite being surrounded and badly outnumbered by their Nationalist enemies, the Communists dedicated themselves to self-destructive campaigns against "the enemy within"-real and imagined traitors to the Communist cause. Committing the police to ferreting out these internal enemies proved pivotal. For the next fifty years, the pursuit of "counter-revolutionary" enemies provided the governing principle of Chinese policing. This proved a surprisingly flexible mission, ranging from the political purges of the 1920s to the anti-drug and anti-prostitution sweeps of the 1950s to the prosecution of the Gang of Four and their followers in the 1970s. Dutton presents a timeline of this history in each chapter, relating political developments to contemporary policing practices. Political policing began to decline with the economic reforms of the 1970s, as policing stability replaced policing the revolutionary line. The history of the police force as a Party organ, however, continues to limit true reform.

The fair the theme of which was "Transportation and Communication: World in Motion - World in Touch" coincided with Vancouver's centennial and was held on the north shore of False Creek. It was the second time that Canada held a World's Fair the first being Expo 67 in Montreal during the Canadian Centennial. It was also the third World's Fair to be held in the Pacific Northwest in the last 26 years as of 1986 and as of 2015 it still stands as the latest World's Fair to be held in North America.

Expo 86 was opened by Charles Prince of Wales Diana Princess of Wales and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney on Friday May 2 1986. It featured pavilions from 54 nations and numerous corporations. Expo's participants were given the opportunity to design their own pavilion or opt for the less expensive Expo module. Each module was approximately two-and-a-half stories high and had the floor space equal to a third of a city block. The design was such that any number of the square modules could be placed together in a variety of shapes. The roof design allowed the interior exhibit space to be uninterrupted by pillars.

This World's Fair was categorized as a "Class II" or "specialized exhibition" reflecting its specific emphases on transportation and communications.
Hong Kong Government Information Services paperback

Döblin, Alfred
The Three Leaps of Wang Lun: a Chinese Novel
8vo, hardcover in dj, pp.418. Here for the first time in English is Alfred Döblin's astonishing epic of eighteenth century China, hailed on its publication in 1915 as a master-piece of Expressionist prose, and since recognized to be the first modern German novel. The Three Leaps of Wang Lun is the story of a doomed sectarian rebellion during the reign of Emperor Ch'ien-lung (1736-1796). It is also the most sustained evocation, in any European language, of a China untouched by the West. Döblin's imagination, almost hallucinatory in its intensity, brings this China to vivid life. Teeming cities and Tibetan wastes, political intrigue and religious yearning, life at Court and the fate of wandering outcasts are depicted in a language of enormous vigour, unfolding the theme of meekness against force, a mystical sense of the world against the realities of power. This translation for the first time presents the whole work as Döblin wrote it. The inclusion of the Prologue, dropped from the first German edition and never replaced, restores a unity of structure and theme missing from previous editions. The Introduction places the novel in the context of Döblin's life and work, the Expressionist movement and the historical background, and discusses its theme and style.
