Feng Menglong Ed.
Stories from a Ming Collection: The Art of the Chinese Storyteller
8vo, br. ed. 204pp. The popularity of the Chinese storyteller goes back to the marketplace of the T'ang dynasty, but the familiar figure came into its own in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This selection of stories from Feng Menglong's collection, Stories Old and New (originally published in 1624), includes representative types of the storyteller's traditional art. "The Pearl-Sewn Shirt" is a cautionary romance describing the tragedy of a broken marriage; the heroic biography, which depicts a neglected man of high worth gradually receiving recognition, is represented by "Wine and Dumplings"; an authentic twelfth-century forerunner of the detective story is found in "The Canary Murders." The other tales concern traffic in the supernatural, didactic admonitions to observe morality in sex and loyalty in friendship, and realistic accounts of the meanness and corruption of official life. Also includes "The Lady Who Was a Beggar," "The Journey of the Corpse," "The Story of Wu Pao-an," and "The Fairy's Rescue."

Feng Zhengjie, Zhu Qi-pi Li, Eleonora Battiston Intr.
FENG ZHENGJIE
4.to, br., pp. 224, ill. b/n col., cm 24x28. (Damiani Forward). Colour photographic illustrations, 220pp, Testo italiano/English/Chinese softcover. "Feng Zhengjie, whose work appears on the cover of 2005's China: The New Contemporary Painting, represents international trends toward borrowing and riffing on bygone styles -and the return to painterly technique - as much as he does his country's blooming contemporary art scene. His sources include posters of Shanghai in the 1930s and contemporary wedding photography, and the bright, streamlined style with which he addresses their conventions has the look of polished fashion imagery, an airbrushed 1980s feeling that's gotten increasingly eerie in recent years as his subjects' irises and pupils have shrunk to little dots on largely white eyes, giving them a glassy, doll-like look. Eleonora Battiston writes, 'Their eyes change and follow the artist's transformations.year by year, with different thoughts, looking towards and within his country's history and culture." Publisher's description. ".

The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Poetry
Pale green paper-covered boards, paper title label inset front panel and spine in plain paper dust jacket printed in green. Edges of boards slightly worn, ow excellent, in original torn tape repaired dj. Despite dj flaws, a clean, presentable copy handsomely printed by the Kynoch Press, Great Britain ; The Ideogramic Series 1edited by Ezra Pound; Square 8vo; 52 pages. This is one of the Ideogramic Series which was edited by Ezra Pound. At the time of printing, the series had 3 volumes in it of which this is #1. Pound provided the foreword and notes for this edition, subtitled "An Ars Poetica". The notes which were finished by Pound from preliminary work by Fenollosa are commentaries on the ideograms themselves with paraphrased translations. Pound introduces his role in the finishing of the notes as being that of "a very ignorant man." The notes include 5 pages or plates of Chinese characters or ideograms.
