Ha ricevuto numerosi premi letterari, tra cui il Lu Xun nel 2000, il Lao She nel 2004, il Franz Kafka nel 2014, il Dream of the Red Chamber Award nel 2016; selezionato al Man Booker International Prize nel 2016. Il successo arriva con un romanzo Wei Renmin Fuwu (2005; trad. it. Servire il popolo, 2006) che critica il governo comunista, in cui il motto rivoluzionario di Mao fa da sfondo a una storia di erotismo estremo tra un soldato, che conosce a memoria tutti i 286 articoli del Libretto rosso, e la moglie del generale presso cui lavora. La censura ne vieta la pubblicazione, ma non impedisce che il romanzo venga tradotto all’estero permettendo allo scrittore di affermarsi in ambito internazionale anche grazie al successivo Ding Zhuang Meng (2006, trad. it. Il sogno del villaggio dei Ding, 2011). Nel 2013, è stato pubblicato in Italia il romanzo Pensando a mio padre (Xiangnian fuqin).

He is the author of numerous novels and short-story collections, including Serve the People!, Dream of Ding Village, Lenin's Kisses, The Four Books and The Explosion Chronicles. He has been awarded the Hua Zhong World Chinese Literature Prize, the Lao She Literary Award, the Dream of the Red Chamber Award and the Franz Kafka Prize. He has also been shortlisted for an array of prizes including the International Man Booker Prize, the Principe de Asturias Prize for Letters, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the FT/Oppenheimer Fund Emerging Voices Award and the Prix Femina Etranger.
