London.: Cecil Palmer. No date. Ca. 1928. Play script in paper wraps 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches; 22 pp. plus one page of advertising. Four silkscreen color plates by Welsh-born artist Dorothy Mullock. Light foxing to a number of pages heaviest on two pages at the rear of the volume light toning to front and back covers otherwise good condition. Book inscribed by the original owner "1928" while the date "1918" appears on the first title page; presumably this is the date of composition. The title page also states the volume is Number 2 in the "Studio Plays" series. Bax's short verse play is set in fifteenth century Italy. A line intoned in the play's opening speech commends "the delicate joy of spoken rhyme"; the reader is duly warned. The deco color plates each depicting women are in good condition with very light foxing restricted chiefly to margins. Overall an attractive publication with condition issues noted. . Two plates feature a single image ten feature two images while the balance feature three or more images. The price list at the front of the portfolio indicates that the plates could be purchased individually or as a set and were available in two different formats at different prices. The series begins with Plate 29 and ends with Plate 52. The colors used are primarily in pastel shades augmented by vibrant gold outlining. This type of applied art portfolio is seldom found complete since they were used as working references. An extremely scarce title; no listing appears in WorldCat. .
