Design Council London first edition 1981. Laminated illustrated wrappers square 4to 21 cm. 190 pp ills some colour. From the blurb - "William Morris's continuing appeal is rooted in his crusades for cultural and artistic conservation his attempts to make honest art and design available to all and in later life to reform society as a whole - causes that are no less relevant today than when he championed them a century ago. This book is a celebration of the work of William Morris - designer writer arid socialist. It provides new insights into the life of Morris his family friends and colleagues and into the chequered and at times contradictory nature of the man himself. The book's central theme is Kelmscott Manor the seventeenth-century Oxfordshire farmhouse that Morris shared with his family and friends for the twenty-five years preceding his death in 1896. During this period the house provided a focus for much of Morris's work and that of his friends Dante Gabriel Rossetti Philip Webb and Edward Burne-Jones. It was in fact the model for 'the old house by the Thames' on which he based his utopian story News from Nowhere and it remained a powerful stimulus and symbol in the moral social and political drinking of this remarkable man. In recent years the Manor's collection of books fine art furniture and furnishings associated with Morris has been greatly added to by the Society of Antiquaries in whose care the house now is. This book contains not only a comprehensive catalogue of the house's contents but also fourteen authoritative contributions covering many aspects of Morris's life and work. A trimming error to the first 4 leaves of the book has left these with a small projection at the top edges near the spine dealt with by folding these corners down otherwise near Very Good.
