Original cloth with gilt titling fading to spine slight wear yo edges. Large previous owner's name on ffep. Some ticking & markings in index & text lists. 115pp 56 plates. Clean and tight. THE collection of rubbings of Monumental brasses in the Department of Engraving Illustration and Design of the Victoria and Albert Museum now numbers more than 2300 examples. Of these the majority are from brasses in or made for British churches and the present catalogue is intended to represent the art of the maker of monumental brasses as practised in this country. For the sake of convenience however the rubbings of foreign brasses and slabs have been included as an appendix. That the representation of British brasses is fairly good may be concluded from the consideration that the Museum collection appears to comprise rubbings from more than five-eighths of all the brasses estimated to be still in existence while among these are to be found examples of almost every one of any substantial importance.
