After attending the Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design, in 1914 he studied with Jean-Antoine Injalbert at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Supporting himself as a machinist in the 1920s, Goodelman became a communist. His concerns about social and economic conditions were expressed in his art. He participated in exhibitions at the John Reed Club in the early 1930s. After World War II, Goodelman created artworks related to the Holocaust. He taught at City College of New York in the 1960s” (National Museum of American Art, 1996) . Very light wear, spine sunned with touch of wear at crown and foot. Illustrated with line drawings and woodcuts, including several by Zuni Maud, and a photograph. Born in the district of Grodno, Lithuania, Zuni Maud Immigrated to the U. S. In 1905. Maud was an artist, cartoonist, puppeteer, playwright, writer and poet. He studied at the Cooper Union Art School, Baron de Hirsch Art School and National Academy of Art, New York. And did illustrations for “Der Kibitzer” and stage and costume design for productions by Maurice Schwartz in the Yiddish Art Theater. He contributed articles to Der Kundes (N. Y. ) , The Jewish Daily Forward (N. Y. ) , Di Tsayt (N. Y. ) , Kinderland (N. Y. ) , The Kinder Zhurnal (N. Y. ) , and The Frayhayt (N. Y. ) . ‎1st edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers, 16mo (small) , 63 pages, 17 cm. Includes portrait of the author (tipped in as published) . A rare Yung Vilne publication. The cover makes use of an interesting period modernist font and design; the title page uses a different but striking constructivist layout and font as well. “hil'e getseykhnt? , Roz'e Sutskever ; portret? , Bentye Mikt? Om. ” Rosa Sutzkever “was one of the best-known artists of Vilna, ” and had trained at the Art Academy there (Bogen, 1991) and was part of Yung Vilna. Yung-Vilne (“Young Vilna”) , was a “Yiddish literary group, introduced in the daily Vilner Tog in 1929 with the headline: ‘Young Vilna Marches into Yiddish Literature. ’ It aroused excitement through its miscellanies (Yung-Vilne, 1934–36) , its contributions to local and international Yiddish journals, and individual books of verse and fiction. Principal members included poets Chaim Grade , Shimshon Kahan, Peretz Miransky, Abraham Sutzkever , Elkhanan Wogler, and Leyzer Wolf , prose writers Shmerke Kaczerginski and Moyshe Levin, and artists Bentsie Mikhtom and Rokhl Sutzkever. Dozens more were associated with the group, whose members were united by generation, place, a shared humanistic orientation, and the encouragement of local intellectuals like Zalman Rejzen and Max Weinreich . A Yung-Vilne evening in the Vilna ghetto, the participation of several members in the partisan underground, and the accomplishments of Grade and Sutzkever as leading postwar Yiddish writers assure that Yung-Vilne will be remembered as one of the great incubators of Jewish creativity in interwar Poland” (Lipzin & Cammy, 2007) . Author Yitzchak Rayz (1885-1943) , “better known by his pen name Moyshe Nadir was an American Yiddish language writer and satirist…. In 1898, at the age of 13, Rayz immigrated to New York and adopted the Americanized name Isaac Reiss. Within a few years his work was published widely in the New York Yiddish press, under a variety of pseudonyms, including Rinnalde Rinaldine, Dilensee Mirkarosh, Der Royzenkavalir, Doctor Hotzikl, and, finally, Moishe Nadir. The name ‘Nadir’ is a Yiddish expression meaning ‘here you are’ or ‘that's for you, ’ but can also mean ‘take this and choke on it. ’ As a teenager, he wrote for Der Groyser Kundes (The Big Prankster) and later co-edited Der Yiddisher Gazlon (The Yiddish Bandit) with Jacob Adler. He wrote for an assortment of Communist Yiddish publications including the Frayhayt (Freedom) newspaper and its successor Morgn Frayhayt (Morning Freedom) and the magazines Der Signal (The Signal) and Der Hammer (The Hammer) . When his sharp-tongued theater reviews caused him to be banned from theatrical productions, he resorted to attending plays in disguise. His own plays were performed by Maurice Schwartz’s Yiddish Art Theater, Zuni Maude and Yosl Cutlers Modicut puppet theater, Artef (Arbeter Teater Faraband, Workers Theater Alliance) and the Federal Theater Project. Among his better known poems are the erotic Vilde Royzen (Wild Roses, 1915) and his 1932 Rivington Strit (Rivington Street) . After a long association with the Frayhayt and the Morgn Frayhayt, Rayz began to distance himself from the Communist cause with the onset of the show trials in the Soviet Union and publicly broke with the Morgn Frayhayt in the wake of the Molotiv-Ribbentrop Pact. He set out his reasons in ‘Di, vos blayben mit der Morgn Frayhayt’ (‘Those who stay with the Morgn Frayhayt’) in response to Morgn Frayhayt editor Moissaye Olgin’s ‘Di vos gayen avek’ (‘Those who leave’) . Rayz discusses his relationship to the Communist Party in his posthumous ‘Moyde Ani’ (Wikipedia, 2019) . In Yiddish. “Yosl Kotler was a master of the stylized grotesque. He was also an extraordinarily accomplished draftsman, able to stretch, shrink and contort a line into an endless kaleidoscope of forms. Kotler is one of the great American artists of modern times, but has never achieved recognition as such. Perhaps because he worked almost exclusively in the Yiddish-speaking milieu, and mainly among Communist circles. Or because he spread his abundant talents in so many directions, including painting, illustration, cartoons, theater design, poetry, fiction, and puppetry. Kotler was fifteen and an orphan when he arrived in America in 1911. He thrived primarily as an illustrator and puppeteer, teaming up with Zuny Maud, an equally multi-talented fellow Bohemian, to create a cult puppet theater in 1925. Kotler was driving to Hollywood hoping to make a puppet movie when he died in a car crash in 1935. His funeral brought 10, 000 people onto the streets of New York. Author Herman Gold was another extraordinary Lower East Side character, described by memoirist Reuben Iceland as "the weaver of the weirdest, wildest word plays. Isaac Bashevis Singer ( 1903-1991) was a “Polish-born Jewish-American writer who wrote and published first in Yiddish and later translated himself into English with the help of editors and collaborators. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. A leading figure in the Yiddish literary movement, he was awarded two U.S. National Book Awards” (Wikipedia). David Hofstein (1889-1952) was a Russian-born Jewish poet who, “after the Russian Revolution of 1917, which he welcomed...wrote only in Yiddish. He was coeditor of the Moscow Yiddish monthly Shtrom, the last organ of free Jewish expression in the Soviet Union. The poems in which he acclaimed the communist regime established him as one of the Kiev triumvirate of Yiddish poets, along with Leib Kvitko and Peretz Markish. Hofstein's elegies for Jewish communities devastated by the White movement pogroms appeared in 1922, with illustrations by Marc Chagall. Both had worked together as teachers at shelter for Jewish boys in suburban Malakhovka, which housed and employed boys orphaned by Ukrainian pogroms. Hofstein protested the banning of Hebrew and the persecution of Hebrew writers, arousing the suspicion of the authorities…. In 1939, Hofstein became member of the Communist Party. Hofstein hailed the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948; however, in the same year, when Joseph Stalin withdrew his support for Israel, Hofstein was arrested, together with Kvitko, Markish and other members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, first transported to Moscow and then to Siberia. He was executed on the Night of the Murdered Poets (August 12–13, 1952) , together with twelve other Yiddish writers and artists. After the death of Stalin, they were posthumously rehabilitated, and Hofstein's selected works reappeared in a Russian translation in 1958” (Wikipedia) . SUBJECT(S) : Yiddish poetry. Poems.
