Chicago Metalsmiths: An Illustrated History

This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Chicago Historical Society in 1977. Sharon Darling's work at the Society sparked or at least co-incided with a revival of interest in the decorative arts work in Chicago around the turn of the twentieth century. She has also produced monographs on the ceramics of the period, notably Teco Pottery. This exhibition took an expansive view of the Chicago School, with the first works in the show being silverware from a number of firms like Sherwood & Whatley, Edwards & Company, and Speer & Cosper, active in the early nineteenth century. The exhibition had many highlights: Robert Jarvie's exquisite silver punch bowl and silver water pitcher of 1911; the many Kalo Shop Arts & Crafts designs, bronze andirons by Prairie School architect George G. This monograph was prepared to accompany the large scale retrospective exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil-Am-Rhein in 2000. Catalogue edited by Alexander von Vegesack. Verner Panton (1926- 1998) lived and worked in Basel, which was close to the Vitra Museum, and when Vitra was opened Panton transferred many objects and drawings and papers to the Vitra Museum archive. The curators at Vitra worked closely with the Panton Office and especially Marianne Panton to provide the most comprehensive showing of Panton's vast output, including textiles.
