Artiste complet, il fut aussi peintre, photographe, architecte, sculpteur, graveur et scénographe. Il se considère d'ailleurs avant tout comme un inventeur et un artiste peintre. Il crée à Venise vers 1899 une entreprise de textile afin qu'il dessine lui même des motifs et fait de surprenantes découvertes techniques. A l'image de Venise, il avait la capacité d'assimiler les cultures les plus diverses. Et ce talent, il ne l'utilisa pas pour les confondre ou les dissoudre dans un melting pot sans caractère et sans nom. Bien au contraire, il sut apprécier, méditer et assimiler ce qu'elles avaient de plus noble et de plus beau. C'est ainsi que le sens artistique de Mariano Fortuny a pu recréer des oeuvres originales qui ont si bien su aider ses contemporains à retrouver la beauté oubliée. Une beauté retrouvée qui évoquait avec légèreté la splendeur du passé de Venise. Artiste peintre amateur de théâtre et d'opéra, devenu scénographe et styliste, il a su mobiliser les moyens les plus divers pour les mettre au service de la création artistique - Ottimo stato.

In un gioco di rimandi assai suggestivo, gioielli e complementi di arredo sfilano accanto alle loro immagini riprodotte in tele d'epoca; raffinate ceramiche dialogano con le loro sorelle dipinte; affascinanti progetti architettonici si rispecchiano negli edifici costruiti. Tra Canova e Alfieri, Appiani e il Bonaparte, Porta e Bossi, fasti napoleonici e emozioni da Grand Tour, algide forme idealizzate e primi afflati romantici, il volume restituisce l'epoca Neoclassica italiana in tutte le sue molteplici sfumature.
