Die Regierung Williams III. und Marias ist besonders wichtig wegen der grossen Veränderungen, die Material und Konstruktion im Möbel damals durchmachen mussten, denn in jener Zeit folgten dem König holländische Handwerker nach England, und der englische Schreiner sah sich veranlasst, die Linien der neuen holländischen Mode abzupassen und nachzuahmen. Come se non si trattasse più di una disciplina all'interno di un sistema delle arti, di un settore professionale e produttivo all'interno di un sistema economico, di un campo di tecniche, concetti, pratiche e tradizioni all'interno di un orizzonte culturale, ma al contrario di una nozione a cui si presta una forma di universalità: il design è tutte queste cose, e molto di più». L'autore, che da tempo risiede e insegna in Francia, fa dunque il punto sul design degli ultimi anni, sfruttando la propria formazione artistica per decifrarne i processi creativi.
