Preliminary sketches and text for The Remembered Visit. Together with a copy of the published book
1964. Gorey Edward. Four sheets three of which measure 8 1/2 by 11 inches; the single sheet of text is smaller measuring 8 by 6 inches and is on blue paper. The pages reveal the unfolding of Gorey's creative process in developing the story and preliminary illustrations for his book The Remembered Visit. The text page which is dated April 16 1964 shows Gorey's conceptual ideas for the main characters of the tale: a "dear little girl Drusilla" and a "wonderful old man famous for something lofty cultured in the dim past" who would become Mr. Crague. The sheets with the sketches for the illustrations show their evolution as they move from vague shapes to a structured page finished with measurements and ruled lines. One of these sheets is dated April 21 1964. Concept drawings by Gorey rarely appear on the market. Some creasing to all leaves likely from mailing otherwise fine. Together with a copy of the first edition of the book published in 1965 by Simon and Schuster. Bound in pictorial boards with matching dust wrapper. Some foxing to edges of text block and wrappers minor edgewear to boards else crisp and near fine. unknown

Q.R.V.
Boston: Anne & David Bromer 1989. Claes Edgard. 32ff. From an edition of 400 copies this is one of 110 hand-colored in metallic casein by the artist and signed by him below the colophon. This Gorey rarity is bound in a one-of-a-kind designer binding by Brother Edgard Claes a binder known for his technical proficiency and progressive style. With twenty-nine illustrations accompanied by rhyming couplets Q.R.V is an homage to Isaac Watts and the text is obscurely akin to "Divine Songs for Children." According to Gorey Q.R.V. is the nothing that cures everything: "When someone's tongue has reached your lung it's time to use your knee; Regain your air of savoir faire by quaffing Q.R.V." Bound with Claes' characteristic polycarbonate boards and airbrushed automotive paint with a snakeskin spine. The boards present a cubist rendering of "Q.R.V." fracturing it into squares of differing blues and reinforcing the elusiveness of the true meaning of the term. Housed in a metal slipcase that features a die cut "Q.R.V." on both sides. Claes has been a monk of the Crosier order since 1976 and the seal of that order along with Claes' signature appear on the rear endpapers. An innovative and modern binding for a mysterious work. Bromer pp. 56-58. 1 1/2 by 1 7/8; 37x44mm. Anne & David Bromer unknown
