This book collects 17 of the best essays from 'Typographica' magazine, the leading periodical on modern typography which was published irregularly from 1949 to 1967. The 14 original issues of 'Typographica' are virtually impossible to obtain, full sets even scarcer. The articles collected here are from the 'New Series' published 1960-67. Foreword by Aaron Burns. Illustrated throughout in black, white and red. New York: Fleming & Carnrick 1898. Quarto. 28ff. Decorated title page printed in four colors; twenty-three ornamental initial capitals printed in red and gold. Spenser's poem celebrating his marriage to Elizabeth Boyle is presumably printed here to mark the occasion of the nuptials of one of the printing firm's partners -- Frank Fleming. The dedication page reads "S.H.D from F.R.F. August twenty-seven eighteen hundred and ninety-eight." Fleming and Carnrick worked primarily as job printers from the latter half of the 19th century into the early part of the 20th century. At the time this was published the firm was located at 520 Broadway in New York. The present work shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on book design. Bound in the style of editions de luxe featuring medium blue levant titled in gilt on upper cover framed by a single gilt rule. Watered silk doublures. Some sunning to spine and light rubbing to extremities. A very good or better example of an uncommon work known in a single institutional holding. Fleming & Carnrick unknown

THE LIFE AND WORK OF KATE GREENAWAY.
London: Bracken 1986. 301 pp 9" H. Kate Greenaway "studied art at South Kensington and the Slade where her fellow students were Lady Butler and Helen Allingham. To start with she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window' which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose' 'The Language of Flowers' 'Marigold Garden' 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' to name but a few. This biography written by her friends M.H. Spielman and G.S. Layard was published in 1905 just four years after her death. It tells the story of her life and relates the romantic circumstances of her great friendship with John Ruskin. It is required reading for all followers of Kate Greenaway and is accompaneid by over 50 colour illutrations by the artist as well as many black and white and line illustrations."
