The Dandy's Toilet or How to be a Beau
England 1835. 4pp. 8ff. Original manuscript set of costume overlays depicting the evolution of a "Youth just ceased to grow" into a "Dandy quite complete." The Youth's ambition is to be a "Beau" and in each successive overlay he puts on more of the trappings of dandyism until his costume is in place with black velvet stock or cravat corset boots pantaloons coat whiskers mustache wig and hat. The overlays are hand-drawn and colored in a caricaturish style with a hole to show the Youth's face below and they are accompanied by a four-page hand-written account in rhyme of the Youth's transformation which builds on itself with each additional article of clothing. The hourglass shape of the Youth's frock coat and his pantaloons date the set to the period between 1825 and 1835. His coat is made by famous Savile Row tailors Henry Poole & Co. and once he has finished his transformation the Youth is ready to lounge on Regent Street. Minor wear to booklet and light spotting to overlays else fine. Housed in cloth chemise. Jane Austen's World; Regency Men's Fashion; Valsin Ellie Men's Fashion ca. 1830 Coats. unknown

The Forest: Peep Show
London: Warren Editions 1981. Jones Harold. One of fifty copies. An enchanting peep show by the well-known children's author and illustrator Harold Jones. Comprised of six layered panels plus the illustrated front panel bearing the title and viewing aperture. Looking into the viewing aperture reveals a glimpse deep into a forest filled with deer squirrels and other animal life. In the background are a waterfall and mountain peaks with trees beginning to show autumnal hues. Printed by Christopher Skelton at Skelton's Press for Jonathan and Phillida Gili. In a slipcase covered with Curwen patterned paper and a hand-colored label numbered and signed by the artist. The project was initially begun in 1981 but the artist and publishers quickly became overwhelmed by orders and realized that they had underestimated the amount of time and work it would take to hand-color and assemble each copy. The edition was finally completed in 1993. One can easily understand the delay: the hand-coloring is precise and intricate and each of the panels is quite detailed. Measures approximately 7 by 6 1/4 inches and 22 inches when extended. Extremely fine. Warren Editions unknown

The Four Seasons. An Impression of Spring Summer Autumn and Winter: a Landscape Panorama
London: Gogmagog Press 1965. Cox Morris. Four small octavo volumes each 26pp. One of 100 copies printed on Hosho paper signed by the artist/printer Morris Cox. Each volume contains a colorful panorama of nature printed from heavily textured blocks which give the offset prints an embossed effect. The changing seasons appear in a flowing image with delicate natural forms and subtle hues. Colin Franklin says that the group is "reckoned as the peak of his achievement as a printer." The texture of the prints derives from the unusual printing blocks used to create them. Cox mounted sheets of cardboard onto plywood and layered them with gesso next adding materials from nature like seeds leaves and twigs. These natural elements were then varnished for strength. Printing these unconventional blocks required an inventive approach. According to David Chambers "These were printed by using the office copying press and then screwing this down several times as the blocks were drawn through on a long carriage." Slight spine slant on Autumn light uniform toning else a fine set in monotype-printed pictorial boards and original acetate wrappers. Considered to be the magnum opus of the Press. Chambers 14-17 20 136. Gogmagog Press unknown
