Art Deco Manufacturing Design
ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR ART DECO TURKEY BOOKEND
Westport CT N.d. but early 20th century. White draughtsman's ink on charcoal cardstock matted. 15.5 x 10.5" 39.4 x 26.7 cm. Near fine mat a bit dusty. A design modeled for a bookend of a turkey in three-quarter pose viewed from the right in a rest position feathers unfurled graphically depicted in classic Art Deco design. Unsigned but attributed by the former owner to F.E. Greene an industrial designer holding myriad patents the earliest among them dating from the 1920s including those for automobile accessories such as dome lights automobile door locks and trimplates for both. Additionally in the early 1930s he held patents for methods for precooling refrigerator cars and ornamental designs for automobile battery storage boxes. He is also credited with being one of the early designers of the PADA radio. He is known to have lived in Westport CT during 1938. unknown books

This archive of original programs most between 24 and 28 pages shed light on the development of events as well as provide a record of the officers board members and trustees of the MDPL. Loaded with original advertisements and each issue contains the schedule of events for the corresponding year. OCLC locates "1" copy of the 1993 program. Black and white title page and 21 of 24 color collotype plates look like lithographs each approximately 20 x 14 inches loose in portfolio - paper covered boards with cloth spine and corners. Portfolio rubbed at extremities with occasional spotting; the plates are in excellent condition with minor creasing on the left margin well outside image produced by the tight dimensions of the portfolio case title page considerably creased along left edge. A portfolio featuring stunning large color plates of beautifully designed Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The windows were created by nine different artists R. Beauclair M.J. Gradl G.M. Ellwood P. Lang R. Geyling J. Goller R. Bacard R. Waldraff R. Rochga. Each artist is identified by initials printed at the bottom of the plate; a key to these appears on the verso of the title page. While the visual motif is overwhelmingly Art Nouveau a number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics to emerge in upcoming decades. An extremely scarce title; however compromised by fire damage to covers and the extremities of a number of plates although not impacting the images themselves. Plates IV VI XXX and XXXII are the most severely affected see images; on the other extreme many plates are scarcely affected. Most damage could be termed singeing to a page border. Short repaired tears to lower corner of two plates. The images themselves are clean and there is no odor. A portfolio of beautifully executed Jugendstil or Art Nouveau patterns for wall decor by Paul Grohmann the colors exceptionally rich and the designs striking. Many of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics emerging in upcoming decades. The text can be readily had in various internet formats and reproductions.but the satisfaction of the boldly handsome binding representing the best elements of the Arts and Crafts period of design cannot be captured in modern commercial endeavors. Portfolio worn and soiled with loss; MISSING plates 42 51 and 52. Scattered soiling edge tears and creasing in margins of several plates. Soiling in two plates 44 and 45; plate 38 has 4 ink spots 2 of which are in the image from paints used by a copyist. Beautifully executed Art Nouveau designs for decorating walls and ceilings created by Paul Grohmann who had an extended career in creating such portfolio design publications. A number of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics that emerged in upcoming decades. Exceptionally fine color lithography evident in every plate. Two plates feature a single image ten feature two images while the balance feature three or more images. The price list at the front of the portfolio indicates that the plates could be purchased individually or as a set and were available in two different formats at different prices. The series begins with Plate 29 and ends with Plate 52. The colors used are primarily in pastel shades augmented by vibrant gold outlining. This type of applied art portfolio is seldom found complete since they were used as working references. An extremely scarce title; no listing appears in WorldCat. . <p>London: James Nisbet & Co. Limited 1906. An octavo 372 pages plus 12 page publisher's catalogue bound in at the back. Emma Marshall wrote several charming tales for children of which this is one. The most striking thing to recommend this copy is the pristine condition of the exquisite Art Nouveau binding design. Panels of darkest olive green with clematis blooms and intertwined stems grace the cover and spine. The flowers are embellished with gilt and deep red that is also used for the panel borders. Gilt titles and top edge gilt. A prize certificate from the Croydon Education Committee dated March 1906 is affixed to the front pastedown. There is some offsetting on to the front free endpaper and a trace of browning on the rear free endpaper.else the book is as fine fresh and crisp as the day it was published.</p>

Parma: Bodoni 1800. Bodoni Giambattista. Folio. Three parts in one. 8 xxvii; 14 xliii; 11 xxxiii pp. 35ff. Contains thirty-five stipple-engraved plates all but one in sepia showing frescoes by the famed Renaissance painter Correggio at the Monastero de San Paolo in Parma. The engravings were done by Francesco Rosaspina after the Portuguese artist Francisco Vieira. Text printed in three parts: Italian by De Rossi French by De Lama and Spanish by Baroni and Arteaga. Dedicated to the recently married Louis of Bourbon-Parma and the Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain. Although the Duke of Parma first approved the project in 1790 the artists were not allowed into the Camera di San Paolo until 1795. They spent one full day in the room recording the frescoes. The drawings were to have been sent to Rome for engraving by Raffaello Sanzio Morghen. Much to the dissatisfaction of Bodoni's patron Morghen could not take on the project.
