The plates are genuine prints: beautifully made modern reproductions of the originals done in Japan. The text traces the rise and fall of the Ukiyo-ye school of Japanese wood-engraving from its origins with the artist Moronobu in the seventeenth century to its decline under Western influences in the nineteenth century. Ukiyo-e is translated as "pictures of the floating world" and prints of this genre depict the carefree pleasures of life: a world of entertainment and beauty beyond mundane everyday concerns. Ukiyo-ye challenged the traditional aristocratic and courtly schools of painting and the plates depict people of the lower classes including actors and courtesans the finely-dressed beauties of the city and tea-house waitresses. Artists of this school featured in Barnett's work include Utamaro Shunsho Harunobu and Kiyonaga. Sumptuously bound in silk brocade backed in gilt-ruled vellum. The endpapers bear prints of a woman carrying an umbrella surrounded by borders of red maple leaves. A few very faint spots of offsetting from the plates else a very fine copy. With the armorial bookplate of Bernard Gore Brett and a small unobtrusive bookseller's label to front paste-down. An enchanting introduction to the art form. Beacon Press unknown

Includes 53 plates depicting tablets, pots, swords, coffins, reliefs, and other ancient works which are brought into perspective to illuminate certain facets of the narratives in the old testament. Richard David Barnett (19091986) , like his father, made his career at the British Museum. Born in London, he began in 1932 as assistant keeper in the department of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities and in 1955 was appointed head of the newly established department of Western Asiatic antiquities. From 1933 to 1935 he was secretary of the British School in Athens. Richard Barnett's research extended to Assyriology, the cultures of Syria, Phoenicia, and Asia Minor as well as biblical archaeology. In 1956 he organized the special exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London commemorating the tercentenary of the resettlement of Jews in the British Isles, and his catalog of the exhibition was one of his most distinguished publications. He was president of the Jewish Historical Society of England (195961) and contributed several important papers on the history of the Sephardim in England to its transactions. His publications include: Carchemish: Report on the Excavations at Djerabis (vol. 3 (with Sir L. Woolley, 1952) ) ; Catalogue of the Nimrod Ivories in the British Museum (1957) ; Assyrian Palace Reliefs and Their Influence on the Sculptures of Babylonia and Persia (1960) ; The Sculptures of Aur-nasir apli II

Diversi sono i mondi che si riconoscono nel "design", termine dal sapore ancora un po' magico che si identifica con i vari soggetti della visualità: linea, forma, spazio, colore, effetti percettivi, tensione dinamica, tradizione cinetica, interazione, fino alla multimedialità intesa in senso multidisciplinare, aperta a nuovi orizzonti tecnologici e a un pensiero ideativo e teorico rigoroso, in armoniosa contaminazione fra diversi campi di ricerca. Quali significati possono assumere oggi le definizioni di "design" e "comunicazione visiva" in uno scenario che comprende tutte le attività creative e progettuali? Hanno ancora un senso concetti come bidimensionalità o staticità formale nel mondo attuale, tendenzialmente fluido e sempre più proiettato verso la simulazione virtuale? Di fronte a tali interrogativi non rimane che ripensare tutto l'iter disciplinare dalle sue fondamenta, al fine di ricostruire percorsi e metodologie, nel tentativo di individuare nuovi strumenti di applicazione e sviluppo per il design grafico.

This is a very good hardcover copy with a very good dust jacket with just light wear. Very clean inside and out, just two marks to the otherwise blank white endpapers: a circular blindstamp from a private collector, the size of a quarter, on both front and rear endpapers, at the corners. Text in Italian. This is a good survey of the highlights of European lighting design from art nouveau and art deco to the functionalism of the Bauhaus and Ulm schools, Wiener Werkstatte, and Italian designs through the 1970's and the beginnings of Memphis. Illustrated mostly in black & white with several color plates. Bibliography. 9" high X 10" wide, 168 pages. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
