Two friends a world apart with a mutual interest in and appreciation for the poetry of Edward Thomas have left us the great gift of this utterly charming work.<br/><br/>Philip Edward Thomas 1878-1917 was already an accomplished novelist and essayist when he turned to poetry. In 1915 at the age of 37 he enlisted in the British Army to fight in "The Great War" and was tragically killed in battle two years later during the Battle of Arras. <br/><br/>His youngest daughter Myfanwy receiving a letter in 1984 from a Mr. Masatsugu Ohtake who was an admirer of Thomas's work responded and the two began a correspondence that would last for almost 20 years as her last letter is dated November 28 2003. <br/><br/>Published privately by the Whittington Press who is renowned for their superb printing and binding; this one of fifteen deluxe copies bound in full Nigerian goatskin by The Fine Book Bindery with endpapers marbled by Christopher Rowlatt printed on Kozo hand-made paper for Masatsugu Ohtake by Patrick Randle with engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn with errata slip loosely laid in at p. 26 with a signature and chop at the colophon which one presumes is that of Masatsugu Ohtake. <br/><br/>The twenty wood-engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn 1898-1982 perfectly complement Myfanwy's description of the lovely English countryside around her which she frequently described to Ohtake; presented in the book in yellow and green and as monochrome in the extra suite of 20 loose plates.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full gold Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine fore- and bottom edges uncut endpapers hand-marbled the twenty in-text wood-engravings throughout errata slip of delicate yellow hand-made paper loosely laid in at p. 26; hand-set Caslon printed on Kozo hand-made paper at Whittington Press for Masatsugu Ohtake small quarto size 10 1/8" by 6 1/4" pagination: i-x 1-34 colophon 35 blank 36 acknowledgement of editor 37; this one of the 15 deluxe copies total edition of 50 with an additional 50 copies also bound in full goatskin for the Whittington Press the chop and signature in Japanese on the colophon page. The extra suite of prints and their wallet also fine; clean and utterly without wear. The slipcase near fine strong and sturdy clean with a few small sections of the brown paper lightly abraded. Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was a Danish / Icelandic sculptor and artist. Thorvaldsen was an outstanding representative of the Neoclassical period in art, becoming the foremost artist in the field after the death of Antonio Canova in 1822. The poses and expressions of his figures are considered much more stiff and formal than those of Canova's. Thorvaldsen embodied the style of classical Greek art more than the Italian artist, he believed that only through the imitation of classical art pieces, could one become a truly great artist. Motifs for his works (reliefs, statues, busts, and illustrations) were drawn mostly from Greek mythology, as well as from works of classic art and literature. 14 mounted plates in pencil, ink and colour wash, 2 of which are stuck to the outsides of the portfolio's protective boards with cloth ties. Various sizes, but mostly ca. 170 x 130 mm. Signed and captioned in English and Hungarian. Rare survival of a collection of sketches from the Russian POW camp in Peschanka, Siberia, all executed by an evidently accomplished, otherwise undocumented Hungarian artist (and soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army) who captured the conditions in and around the camp during the later years of the First World War. Thám's caricature-like style is marked by clear, precise outlines reminiscent of the contemporaneous work of Olaf Gulbransson and Eduard Thöny. The two larger sketches on the cover boards (measuring ca. 170 x 220 mm) show self-portraits of the artist, at work at oil paintings (one a landscape, the other a nude). The leaves within show prisoners climbing the bunk bed or resting in their crowded cots, marching through a snowed-in camp carrying heavy buckets, playing chess, etc.; some are captioned "Coming from the American Y.M.C.A. Kitchen", "The Red Cross library", or even show ladies in fur coats with an officer "at the exhibition", while a few others have Easter Greetings themes. - Peschanka is near Chita in the Transbaikalia region, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 6035 kilometres from Moscow. While during the Great War conditions in the POW camps on the whole were vastly superior to those during WWII, thanks to the efforts of the Red Cross and inspectors from neutral countries, the situation in the Siberian camps was notoriously poor, and as many as a quarter of the 2.1 million Austro-Hungarian soldiers whom Russia held as prisoners of war did not survive. - Browned due to paper, with occasional edge flaws, but well preserved.

Charming caricature by the Venetian master depicting a liveried gentleman with épée and tricorne in profile, accentuating the figure's implausibly hollow back, grotesquely hooked nose, and impressive prognathism. The drawing can be attributed to Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, the oldest son and student of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. - The drawing is very similar to the caricature of a gentleman with walking stick and tricorne that is held at the MET (Inv.: 37.165.68).

Le poème est de André Lemoyne dont on peut voir le nom effacé en bas de la planche à droite. Peut-être s'agit-il du portrait de Louise Colet. Cette estampe n'est pas référencée par Béraldi, et n'apparaît pas au catalogue Tissot, ni à sa vente, mais est décrit au catalogue de l'exposition de Paris (Petit Palais, 1985), comme étant connu à 4 exemplaires seulement. Henri Louis Bischoffsheim 1829-1908 was a prominent Dutch financier of the house of Bischoffsheimand Goldschmidt who became a British citizen in 1867. His wife Clarissa Bischoffsheim led a social circle from their mansion Bute House in South Audley Street now the Egyptian Embassy. They collected art including her portrait by Sir John Everett Millais. After his retirement from business they were active philanthropists: the Jews' Free School; the council of the Anglo-Jewish Association; the Roumanian Committee; the Jewish Convalescent Home Hampstead; and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. He founded and owned the Metropolitan Hospital Ambulances which provided first aid in parts of London; paid for the construction of the children's wing in the Jewish Convalescent Home; and founded the Daneswood Sanatorium at Woburn Sands Bedfordshire for Jewish consumptives. James Delahunty 1808-1885 an Irish Liberal Party politician represented Waterford City in Parliament where he advocated for taking the British currency off the gold and silver standard. Trophées des Armées Françaises depuis 1792 jusqu'en 1815 [PLATES VOLUME ONLY OF SIX VOLUME SET].
UNIQUE single volume featuring only the plates from Pierre François Tissot's popular work "Trophées des Armées Français". The book, published around 1820, described the French victories during the French revolutionary wars, and was accompanied by b&w engravings made by the artist Edme Bovinet and F. L. Couché fils. These engravings, 70 in number, comprise this volume, and depict scenes of famous land and naval battles, sieges and conquests. The volume features no title page. The only text present in the book are the image captions, and the occasional mention of a famous general present in a battle. 150x230mm. Unpaginated (70 plates). Black quarter-cloth Hardocver. Cover and cover edges slightly worn. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Small sticker on front cover. Spine edges and front hinge peeling. Ornate stickers on both endpapers. Binding slightly loose, several plates partly loose from binding. Pages yellowing and age-stained. [SUMMARY]: Save for the aforementioned wear, this one of a kind volume featuring valuable engravings of the Napoleonic wars, is in good condition.
