American Prints: Anti Federalist Newspaper
A Rare Anti-Federalist Newspaper from December 1787 Signed in Type “Brutus†Which Sought to Counter the Federalist Papers and Alexander Hamilton
These original printings are scarce this one from a publication in Massachusetts prior to ratification of the Constitution The Federalist later known as The Federalist Papers is a collection of 85 articles and essays written under the pseudonym “Publius†by Alexander Hamilton James Madison and John Jay to promote the ratification of the United States Constitution. Seventy-seven of these essays were published serially in the Independent Journal the New York Packet and The Daily Advertiser between October 1787 and August 1788. They were written to contest charges made by the antifederalists who were publishing their own essays. A native of Schenectady New York Robert Yates was a well-educated lawyer. A strong supporter of independence he served on the Albany Committee of Safety and in the provincial congress. He played a key role in drafting the first constitution for New York State. A determined opponent of the Constitution Yates left the Philadelphia convention in protest. With his fellow delegate John Lansing Jr. he wrote a joint letter to Governor Clinton that detailed the dangers of a centralized government and the illegitimacy of the Constitutional Convention. He worked vigorously against ratification when the state convention met and it is thought that he is the likely author of a series of letters signed “Brutus†and “Sydney†that criticized the Constitution. Like Madison and Hamilton Yates took personal notes at the convention. The Independent Chronicle and the Universal Advertiser Volume XIX Number 998 published in Boston by Adams and Nourse. A full front-page printing of Brutus III signed in type. In this essay Brutus anticipating Federalist 55 attempts to show that in the Constitution “the powers are not properly deposited for the security of public liberty.†He is a firm supporter of the position that “representation in government should be in exact proportion to the numbers†of people. Thus he is upset with 1 the 3/5 provision in the scheme of representation in the House 2 equal representation for the States in the Senate 3 the insufficiency in the number of representatives to be elected 4 the lack of provision for a “resemblance†of the “true likeness of the people†in the assembly 5 the probability that only the “rich†and “well born†will be represented and 6 things will get worse. In short “the representation is merely nominal—a mere burlesque; and that no security is provided against corruption and undue influence.†The debate in Massachusetts continued and the state finally ratified in early February unknown

American Prints Henry Remsen
After Lexington and Concord A Rare Broadside Urging the Election of Son of Liberty and Patriot Firebrand Isaac Sears to the New York Provisional Congress
Printed by John Holt just before the Battle of Bunker Hill this broadside belonged to New York Merchant Henry Remsen We found no copies of this Revolutionary Era broadside having reached the market; The only other copies we have managed to locate are in the Library of Congress and the Library Company of Philadelphia Between 1775 and 1776 the term “provincial congress†in some colonies “provincial convention†was used to describe the primary revolutionary body managing the transition of power from traditional colonial legislative assemblies to independent state legislatures. Inasmuch as the traditional assemblies had been perceived as the “people’s house†from the early seventeenth century on it was natural that the popularly elected provincial congresses saw themselves as transitory representatives meeting in lieu of legally considered lower houses of the colonial legislatures. In sum the Americans were inventing government as they went along. On April 23 1775 news of the Battles of Lexington and Concord arrived in New York. The First Provincial Congress was convened in New York City on May 22 1775. The congress adapted a “plan of Accommodation between Great Britain and America†which it sent to its delegates to the Continental Congress urging extreme caution in the quarrel with England. The plan demanded the English authorities repeal all unconstitutional laws affecting the colonies and an acknowledgement of the right of the colonies to self-taxation. In return New York promised to contribute to the costs of defense the maintenance of civil government and to recognize England’s right to regulate imperial trade. Isaac Sears was an early New York merchant and patriot who opposed the Stamp Act and helped organize the Sons of Liberty in 1765. On April 15 1775 he was arrested for his anti-British activities but was rescued at the prison door by his supporters and paraded through the streets as a hero. When news of the Battle of Lexington arrived he and his followers seized the arsenal at the Custom House. He was the de facto commander of New York City until Washington’s Army arrived in June 1776. Sears was an uncompromising presence in the Congress. Henry Remsen was a noted NY merchant and Deputy Chair of the Provincial Congress. Printed Broadside signed in print by Henry Remsen June 5 1775: By order of the committee Henry Remsen dep. chairman; Ascribed to the press of John Holt by Evans Evans number: 14331; being the copy handed down through the direct Remsen descendants. “Resolved that Mr. Isaac Sears be nominated by this Committee for the approbation of the freeholders and freemen of this city and county to represent them in Provincial Congress in the room of Mr. George Folliott who declines serving: – And that Mr. William Bedlow and Mr. John Woodward be also nominated as members of this Committee instead of Mr. John Woodword be also nominated as members of this committee instead of Mr. George Folliot and of Mr. Samuel Jones who never has attended. Ordered that a poll be opened at the City Hall on Thursday the eighth instant at nine o’clock in the morning to elect the above persons or such others as may be approved of for the above purposes; at which time and place the freeholders and freemen are requested to attend – The poll will be under the inspecton of Messrs. Robert Ray and Evert Banker and the Westrymen of the North-Ward.†We found no copies of this having reached the market; ESTC lists two copies in the United States. This is Remsen’s copy passed down by his descendants and offered for sale here for the first time unknown

American Prints Massachusetts Centinel Newspaper
One of the Nation's First Ever Political Cartoons the Federal Pillars Celebrating South Carolina's Ratification of the Constitution
This rare printing shows South Carolina's ratification forecasts Virginia's eventual ratification and shows the pillars prominently at the top of the page On March 24 1784 Benjamin Russell launched a newspaper The Massachusetts Centinel. The Centinel overflowed with arguments for the new Constitution and with exultation as one state after another ratified it. Russell devised a cartoon showing each state as a column for the new federal edifice adding a new column as word of each ratification came in. Each pillar is labeled by a state in order of its ratification beginning with Delaware and ending with Massachusetts. This cartoon is among the first political cartoons ever printed in the United States and it is recognized as the first cartoon series. Ratification of the Constitution by the State of South Carolina occurred on May 23 1788 by a Convention presided over by Thomas Pinckney. It was the eighth state to do so. On June 2 Virginia met to consider and ratify it. Russell’s now-famous cartoon celebrated as the succession of states ratified the Constitution. The Massachusetts Centinel Boston June 11 1788 containing one of the most elusive issues of this famous Boston title and one of the cherished “pillar cartoonsâ€. It is replete with Constitution-related content. The front page contains a letter signed in type by the President of the South Carolina Convention Thomas Pinckney proposing small suggested changes to the Constitutional text and other notes from the state’s deliberations. The inside contains the pillar cartoon noting South Carolina has ratified the Constitution the 8th state to do so. The text immediately beneath the engraving is headed: “Eighth Pillar†with the text beginning: “As we predicted in several preceding papers so has the fact been verified. Since our last the pleasing intelligence of the accession of another PILLAR in support of the Grand Federal Superstructure has been received…the influence of the decision of the State of South Carolina on the other states that have not yet had opportunity to adopt the Constitution must be the most favourable. The particulars of this event follow:…†and what follows is a lengthy report from Charleston noting the details of S.C. ratifying the Constitution. Following the news from South Carolina is a report from Virginia beginning: “The Federal Constitution will be adopted by us. The reception & discussion it met with from your State have removed the film of prejudice from the eyes of many well-meaning men of our state. They have agreed to speak well of it…North Carolina generally follows this state & it is probable she will join us in the decision of this great national & all important question…â€. Responding to this news the pillar cartoon shows the S.C. pillar fully raised and the pillar noted “Virginia†partially elevated with the note “It will rise.†and the New Hampshire pillar still lying on its side. unknown

American Prints Shays Rebellion Broadside
Rare and Original Shays Rebellion Broadside Promising Pardons to Those Involved
Shays’ Rebellion was a series of violent attacks on courthouses and other government properties in Massachusetts beginning in 1786 which led to a full-blown military confrontation in 1787. The rebels were mostly ex-Revolutionary War soldiers turned farmers who opposed state economic policies causing poverty and property foreclosures. The rebellion was named after Daniel Shays a farmer and former soldier who fought at Bunker Hill who was one of several leaders of the insurrection. The situation escalated. In December 1786 a militia assaulted a farmer and his family in Groton arresting and crippling the farmer which further fanned the flames of the insurrection. In January 1787 Governor Bowdoin hired his own army privately funded by Boston businessmen. Some 4400 men under the command of General Benjamin Lincoln were directed to put down the insurgency. The Disqualification Act was passed by the House and Senate of Massachusetts on February 16 1787. It set forth conditions for granting pardons to the men who participated in Shays' Rebellion as privates or noncommissioned officers. The men were required to turn in their guns and take an oath of allegiance delivered by a Justice of the Peace. The Justice of the Peace was then required to relay the men's names to the clerks of their towns. The men were barred from serving as jurors members of town or state government and certain professions for three years. They also lost their right to vote in town elections. Printed Broadside signed in type by James Bowdoin as Governor an effort by the Massachusetts governor to settle the violent tax revolt which had shaken the western part of his state: "A Proclamation. Whereas by an Act passed the sixteenth of February instant entitled 'An Act describing the disqualifications to which persons shall be subjected which have been or may be guilty of Treason' . I have thought fit . to issue this Proclamation hereby promising pardon and indemnity to all offenders . provided they comply with the terms and conditions thereof." This offer of amnesty was not enough for some of the rebels. Ten days later 120 of them clashed with the militia in Sheffield MA bringing the conflict to a close. American Prints Bunker Hill Rare Print
The Nation Celebrates the Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill A Rare Print From the Library of the Family of Joseph Warren the First Great Fallen Hero of the War
This rare print still in its original form belonged to George Washington Warren the grandnephew of General Joseph Warren and has never before been offered for sale The only known copies of this document are at Brown University the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Boston Atheneum. We found no record of this print having ever reached market On June 17 1775 the British army under General William Howe supported by Royal Navy warships attacked the defenses the colonists had erected on Bunker and Breeds Hills. The British troops moved up Breeds Hill in perfect battle formations. Patriot leader William Prescott allegedly encouraged his men “not fire until you see the whites of their eyes.†Two assaults on the colonial positions were repulsed with significant British casualties; the third and final attack carried the position after the defenders ran out of ammunition. The colonists retreated to Cambridge over Bunker Hill leaving the British in control of Charlestown but still besieged in Boston. The battle was a tactical victory for the British because they held the ground but it proved to be a sobering experience involving more than twice the casualties than the Americans had incurred including many officers. The battle had demonstrated that inexperienced Continental militia could stand up to regular British army troops in battle at a time when the British were considered to have the finest army in the world. It encouraged revolutionaries throughout America and made the success of such a revolution actually seem possible. In 1823 Edward Everett Daniel Webster famed physician John C. Warren and others co-founded the Bunker Hill Monument Association which sought to memorialize that battle with a grand monument. They petitioned the Massachusetts House and Senate for recognition and support and a subsequent Act was passed giving both. Then began the work to draw interest raise money design the monument and build it a years-long effort that created the first major monument to the American Revolution and the first public obelisk in the United States. In 1824 and 1825 they began notifying the public of their work elected their officers and then wrote a circular eliciting donations and elected prominent men honorary members. They informed these men and the responses the committee received back were from many great men of the era including Thomas Jefferson James Madison James Monroe Oliver Wolcott Joseph Story and the Marquis de Lafayette. During Lafayette’s celebrated return to America in 1824-5 he visited all 24 states and traveled more than 6000 miles. More than 80 American counties cities towns and countless roads were named in his honor. He toured the northern and eastern states in the fall of 1824 including Boston where in September 3000 children ages 8-12 lined up to receive him. They “wore ribbons in their breasts stamped with a miniature likeness of Lafayette.†There Lafayette was informed of the Bunker Hill monument project. He then headed south. It was businessman and future congressman Abbott Lawrence who first suggested to the Bunker Hill Monument Association that it enlist the Marquis de Lafayette and invite him to lay the cornerstone of the monument during his trip. In the end Lafayette would lay the cornerstone on June 17 1825 the anniversary. Leading patriot Dr. Joseph Warren was part of the battle. He was killed during the fighting the first prominent martyr to the cause. At the time a printed broadside was prepared to be sold to people celebrating that day. Two printed broadsides still together as they were printed. ‘Battle of Bunker Hill : Tune–“Yankee Doodle.â€â€˜ Verse in fourteen four-line stanzas printed in two columns separated by a single rule including ornamental border. Printed on same sheet with: “Ode for the 17th of June 1825.†The Battle of Bunker Hill is on the left within an ornamental border and Ode is on the right within an identical border. This document belonged to George Washington Warren the grandnephew of the fallen hero of Bunker Hill General Joseph Warren and has never before been offered for sale. The only known copies of this document are at Brown University the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Boston Atheneum. We found no record of this print having ever reached market. Our gratitude to the Massachusetts Historical Society for their aid in the research of this document unknown

A rare series of 6 engraved anamorphic prints mounted on wooden panels and coloured by a contemporary hand. They are designed to be viewed in a cylindrical mirror and each has a half circle in the plate to indicate where to stand the mirror. They contain no text series numbers or makers' names. In the 18th century anamorphic prints became very popular and several series were available including sets published by Elias Baeck Hertel Musschenbroek and Pieter Schenk all very different from the present set.The set includes: a bust of a bald man; a man in a black three-corner hat holding a book in his hands; a peacock; a long-horned and long-haired goat sitting; a greyhound; and a boy or young man in a broad-brimmed hat playing a recorder.Other sets with the same prints but different colouring are located in the collections of the Getty Library 2002.R.27; 7 prints and the Dutch Museum Boerhaave P02554-P02558; 5 prints. At least 2 of the 6 prints reappeared in the 19th century as part of a print series lithographed by A. Bökel. In 3 of the prints part of a watermark can be made out: a Strasbourg coat of arms and the name of Jean Villedary in Angoulême who supplied much paper used in Holland and England. The closest matches are Heawood 1829 Holland 1743 and 1835A England 1762 and Churchill 411 London 1766. The goat with a small scuff mark in the background and the man with the book somewhat rubbed generally but overall in very good condition with only minor scratches not interfering with the image. Given the nature of the material the condition is remarkably good.l Cf. Baltrušaitis Anamorphoses ou magie artificielle des effets merveilleux 1969; Buijnsters Papertoys pp. 31-32 and 371 2 Dutch series ca. 1720 and 2nd half of 18th century; Leeman Anamorfosen 1975. unknown
