One of 160 copies octavo size 55 pp. The thirteenth publication from The Allen Press this story by Honore de Balzac 1799-1850 was originally titled "Maitre Cornelius" and first appeared in 1831 in the "Revue de Paris"; it was published in book form in 1832. Balzac was a prolific French novelist and playwright perhaps best remembered today for "Eug�nie Grandet" his first bestseller; in this famous wayward love story set in fifteenth-century France Marie de Saint-Vallier daughter of Louis XI is unhappily married and becomes entangled in an unusual love affair. The book features four wood engravings by the incomparable Mallette Dean 1907-1975 painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco on projects such as the WPA Mural Project the murals in Coit Tower and for fifteen years illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press and other Bay-Area presses such as the Allens'. The First UK printing published by The Golden Cockerel Press London in 1948. Number '36' of only 80 specially bound copies signed by both the author and artist to the limitation page. The BOOK is in Very Good or better condition. Full brown morocco binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with five raised bands gilt spine titling and large gilt designs by the artist on the upper and lower covers. Gilt ruled turn-ins. top edge gilt and others uncut. 3 maps by Mina Greenhill and 10 wood engravings by Clifford Webb 8 full page. Some discolouration and light marking to the outer fore edge of the front board and some light fading to the outer fore edge of the rear cover with a neat previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. The book is protected in loose Mylar archival cover. A very handsome production - 'Clifford Webb's wood engravings seemed to me the finest yet produced by this master of black and white.' Le Journal des dames et des modes est une revue trimensuelle de mode française illustrée créée en 1797. Sa publication est stoppée en 1839 avant d'être reprise en juin 1912 sous l'impulsion de Tommaso Antongini, le secrétaire, ami et biographe de Gabriele d'Annunzio. Elle disparaîtra en août 1914 à l'aube de la Première Guerre mondiale. La revue était tirée à 1279 exemplaires ce qui en fait, pour l'époque, une publication relativement confidentielle. Les 186 planches, d'une grande finesse, sont gravées sur papier fort puis coloriées au pochoir. Elles représentent, la majorité du temps, des femmes, mais aussi des hommes et des enfants. An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton, one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines, featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925, with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war (the editor-in-chief having been called up for service). It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2,000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start, this sumptuous publication "was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society," (Françoise Tétart-Vittu, "La Gazette du bon ton", in Dictionnaire de la mode, 2016) and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot, known as Cochin, later used (in 1946) by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils, heightened in colors, some highlighted in gold or palladium. The story began in 1912, when Lucien Vogel, a man of the world involved in fashion (he had already been part of the fashion magazine Femina) decided, with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff - the sister of Jean, creator of Babar - to set up the Gazette du bon ton, subtitled at the time: "Art, fashion, frivolities." Georges Charensol noted the reasoning of the editor-in-chief: "'In 1910,' he observed, 'there was no really artistic fashion magazine, nothing representative of the spirit of the time. My dream was therefore to make a luxury magazine with truly modern artists...I was assured of success, because when it comes to fashion, no country on earth can compete with France.'" At first, Vogel put together a team of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud, followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt, as well as eventually his friends from school and the School of Fine Arts, like George Barbier, Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Charles Martin. Other talented people soon came flocking to join the team: Guy Arnoux, Léon Bakst, Benito, Boutet de Monvel, Umberto Brunelleschi, Chas Laborde, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Raoul Dufy, Édouard Halouze, Alexandre Iacovleff, Jean Émile Laboureur, Charles Loupot, Chalres Martin, Maggie Salcedo. An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton, one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines, featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925, with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war (the editor-in-chief having been called up for service). It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2,000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start, this sumptuous publication "was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society," (Françoise Tétart-Vittu, "La Gazette du bon ton", in Dictionnaire de la mode, 2016) and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot, known as Cochin, later used (in 1946) by Christian Dior. William Henry Bartlett 1809-1854 published view books of Europe Central America and the East; he also toured the United States four times. The views produced in earlier visits were published in 1840 as American Scenery with text by Nathaniel P. Willis. Bartlett died on board ship returning from the Orient in 1854. His History of the United States of North America published posthumously was illustrated with full-page steel-engraved plates most based on his views. Bartlett had written only the first three sections of the first volume; the majority of the text was written by B.B. Woodward. The 3 volumes as published in the first edition should consist of 698 p. 720 p. and 726 p. issued in parts. The owner of this copy apparently took the original parts to bookbinder Belthasar Kohler before the third volume had been completed; the binder produced three volumes of about the same size by binding part of vol. 1 in the second volume and part of vol. 2 in the third volume which was bound without the second half of vol. 3. The text concludes with 1829. Contains engraved title page and 66 additional leaves of plates 2 folding. In Very Good- Condition: edges rubbed; engraved title page folded map and first leaf of text are detached together but present; several pages of vol. 1 stained; 1 plate in vol. 3 torn horizontally without loss; folded facsimile is starting to separate along both folds; the back board of vol. 2 was exposed to water at some point resulting in some loss of marbled paper on the board discoloration of the leather along the back joint and discoloration at the ends of gutter on the last few leaves; occasional foxing primarily in margins of plates; otherwise clean and tight. <br/><br/> George Virtue hardcover

Original single-sheet steel engraving of a very fine quality. Overall size ca. 215 x 270 mm. Image size ca. 130 x 190 mm. A three-line caption engraved at bottom in elegant handtooled open-face and italic types. Engraved Artist's and Engraver's signatures underneath image. Engraved Publisher's line below. The print is in its original state, trimmed and gilded on three sides. It is printed with warmer ink, somewhat more dramatic in mood, with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. In overall fine condition. Preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving, representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett (born London, 1809) was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, the Americas, and the Middle East, producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" (London, 1849).
