Japan n.d. ca 1830-40's. Three prints two from an erotic book each in 2 parts: 20.5 x 14; 3rd is 19 x 14 cm. and is probably a later work from about the Meiji period or 1880's. The first two are slightly discoloredthe last one is clean. . . . THREE ORIGINAL COLOR WOODBLOCK EROTIC PRINTS . . . The first two prints are from what is probably the same erotic book Shunpon both show a couple engaged in love-making. Each has text and comments of the lovers while engaged in love-making. . One pair of pages are re-backed the other not they are from about the 1830-40's. . The third item is newer and quite clean. It shows a couple under a Kimono while the man caresses her vagina. This is probably a Meiji work from about 1870-80's. Its quite clean and bright with good image. . All are tipped on to a hand-made Washi paper backing sheet which is 17 x 20 cm. . Good examples from the "Shunga" erotic woodblock prints genre. . . unknown
Dong Ho Village n.d. ca 1950's. A suite of 15 color woodcuts each print ca. 7.5 x 13 cxm card matted contained in a ma- tching folder with one more print layed down. These hand make prints are used for the Lunar New Year cele- bration of "Tet" in Vietnam. They are displayed inside homes and by doors to invoke or exclude what is depicted in the prints in the hopes of gaining good luck good fortune and a good social life in the New Year. These prints were made in Dung Ho village about 30 miles North of Hanoi and have been made there for hundreds of years. Hand-made printed in color by hand on woodblockss. Each print depicts a charming folk illustration in a variety of 15 celebrated and famous images or icons. . unknown

Bound by Hayday in full fine crushed dark green morocco with gilt ruling and decoration to the boards and spine titles in gilt to the spine gilt dentelles and gilt to all page edges. Printed by S. & R. Bentley on fine laid paper. A very good copy with only minor rubbing and bumping to the boards. The contents with the armorial bookplate of Hugh Perkins to the front pastedown of each volume a previous owner's bookplate to the front free endpaper of volume one and some offsetting/toning to the pages either side of the plates are otherwise clean throughout. A beautiful set. Inscribed by the publisher William Pickering to the front endpaper of volume one "This copy contains a set of the plates by Stothard of which only 12 were taken upon India paper before the letters W. Pickering". A wonderful early nineteenth century edition of this masterpiece of early Italian literature notable for its lengthy introductory essay 'Discorso storico sul testo del Decamerone Foscolo' by the Italian poet Ugo Foscolo 1778-1827. Whilst living in London during the last eleven years of his life Foscolo a popular figure in fashionable literary and political circles produced several well-received dissertations on the central figures of Italian literature including Boccaccio Dante and Petrarch. His prefatory dedication to the present work is to the Whig politician and bibliophile Roger Wilbraham. In it Foscolo suggests that this new edition would make a fine addition to Wilbraham's collection of Italian literature which contained many of the rarest works of both ancient and modern poetry and romance and upon which Foscolo himself had drawn during the production of his writings.
