<p>Chomolithography 265x395mm original proof impression.<br /> <em>“The second versions of the Vanity Fair caricatures are the proof prints or proofs before lettering. First versions are the original watercolors; third versions are the widely available weekly/album prints.  Produced to verify the colours and lines of the lithograph no more than twenty copies were printed. </em><strong>Not true many more than that.</strong><em> These prints have no captions or dates or other descriptive type and the magazine bound them in numbered albums in green leather with gilt tooling. They were offered for sale and also awarded as prizes in the magazine’s acrostic contests. At the front of each volume is a printed note from Vanity Fair giving the number of the proof volume and the numbered volume in the series. </em><strong>However these volumes were "broken" to sell individually and one never sees the complete volume. </strong><em>The quality of the colours in the proof prints their clarity of line and detail and their scarcity make them of considerable interest to the collector.â€<br /> <br /> </em>Roy T. Raoul Varin of Paris France re-created the original paintings in the mid-1920s. The differences between Mr. Varin's paintings and the original prints were subtle. He engraved a variety of signed limited edition numbered prints . in the 1920s and 1930s. They were published by A Ackermann & Son . His views took a historical perspective . often based on extant classical works - Chicagology.com". Only 100 signed prints of the finished work were published. This is an aquatint reprint for Sidney Z. Lucas who operated the Old Print Center in NYC: this reprint was likely done between 1930-1960. Sidney Z. Lucas unknown

Image measures approx. 15.5 inches by 21.25 inches; unframed but mounted on fiberboard dark "tidal stain" at lower left margin maskable with matting. <br/><br/>Perhaps the most vivid illustrations created of 1860 Chicago were published by Jevne and Almini in France. Raoul Varin of Paris France re-created the original paintings in the mid-1920s. "The differences between Mr. Varin's paintings and the original prints were subtle. ont> T. Evans and P. Elmsley : London 1778 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A ten volume set of works featuring the dramatic writing of the renaissance playwrights Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. Complete in 10 volumes. Scarce to find a complete set. Featuring the dramatics works of Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. The worked collaboratively on numerous plays including 'The Woman Hater' 'The Maid's Tragedy' and 'Love's Pilgrimage'. The pair began writing for children and later progresses to writing for The King's Men the group to which Shakespeare belonged for many years. There were believed to have lived together until Beaumont's marriage. The pairs creating relationship ended when Beaumont became ill in the early 17th century. John Fletcher in particular is well recognised as a successor of Shakespeare in regards to his position in the King's Men. After the death of Shakespeare Fletcher would go on to write for the company until his own death in 1625. In total the set includes the plays 'Wild-Goose Chase' 'Lovers' Progress' 'Double Marriage' 'Maid in the Mill' 'Tragedy of Bonduca' 'Fair Maid of the Inn' and 'Coxcomb' among many others. With additional notes and critical works by a variety of commentators. Illustrated with 54 engravings throughout including a frontispiece to each volume. Collated complete. With the binders stamp to the front pastedown of 'Tyrrell's Pty. Sydney. ' The bookplate of 'Athol H Lewis' to the front pastedown with the image of gallows with the caption reads 'Sad end of a man who failed to return a book belonging to Athol H Lewis'. Condition: Rebacked in a full calf binding. Externally generally smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities resulting in a small amount of loss to the leather. The spine labels to volume II and V are lacking with loss to each of the remaining spine labels heaviest to volume I and IV. The front and rear boards of volume I are detached but present. Front boar of volume II is detached but present. Backstrip to volume II is beginning to lift to the head and tail. Crack to the head of the rear joint of volume III. Large crack to the front joint of volume VI with risk of the front board becoming detached. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Light offsetting to the front and rear pastedowns. The front and rear hinges of each volume are strained failing to volumes I and I resulting in the previous mentioned detached boards. Front hinge of volume IV notable strained. Internally generally firmly bound. Binding to volume I has failed with the text block split in two to page 114held together by the backstrip only. Pages are generally clean with instances of spotting and light offsetting caused by the engraved plates. Overall Condition: Good Only. ont> T. Evans and P. Elmsley : London hardcover

Pierre Francois Verheyden c. 1843-1919 was a Belgian artist who lived in London from about 1870 onward; he was a sculptor as well as a caricaturist. Charles Clow Tennant 1st Baronet 1823-1906 was a Scottish industrialist who was a member of Parliament from 1879 to 1886. His second wife Marguerite Agaranthe Miles was a talented amateur violinist for whom he bought the violin that was dubbed the Lady Tennant Stradivarius. In this issue he reprints poems from Paul Verlaine's Po�mes Saturniens. The plate of a woman in front of a forest is by Andhr� des Gachons and dated 1896. It is accompanied by "A Une Femme" translated by A. Lenalie. Very scarce with the loose plate and poem on tissue. Second Edition, with additions, 4to, vi,151,[1]pp., with the armorial bookplate of Lady Frances Scott, engraved frontis., light water stain to lower outer corner of first 15 pages, cont. calf, hinges cracked, label chipped. First published in 1745 and Dedicated to the Duchess of Portland, from whose most extensive collection it was compiled. Vertue derived much of the information for the life of Hollar from the younger Faithorne and Mr. F. Place, both of them engravers, who were very conversant with Hollar during his residence in London.
