It is a rare species, but it exists, as '60s art critic Pascal Renous pointed out on the subject of artistic couples. This designer-decorator duo of Janine Abraham and Dirk-Jan Rol met at Jacques Dumond's studio in 1955. The couple shares the same love of precision, line and plain colours. Their earliest joint creations were first exhibited at the Salon des artistes decorateurs, in Paris. Their furniture, made of wicker, wood and aluminium, twice won prizes at the Salon des artistes decorateurs (a sideboard in 1956 and an armchair in 1958), garnering notice from the public and professionals alike. Jean Royere did not hesitate to use their emblematic Soleil armchair (gold medal at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair) in the decoration of the palace of the Shah of Iran, in Teheran. Their light and functional designs are available today, re-edited by Yota Design. Abraham & Rol were also interior designers and intervened in this capacity for both individual clients and large corporate clients, such as Yves Rocher and Saint-Gobain, with the same precision and sense of composition that define their furniture pieces. Finally, the couple also expressed their creativity through architecture, their mastery of this discipline enabling them to design some twenty houses from the 1960s through the 2000s in the Ile-de-France region. Their homes are genuine inhabited sculptures, of which certain have become truly emblematic.

20 March no year. On letterhead of The Yellow House 8 Palace Court Bayswater London W. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. He begins by thanking him for his 'kindness in the matter of the plate at New'. He called there that morning and has 'sent on Dr Russells letter of introduction' and has 'written to Dr Moyle' explaining his object and he hopes he will give him permission to have the photod. wh: I consider about the finest piece of dated H English Plate in existence -'. He continues: 'Plate has changed its position since years ago you & I used to talk about it & when you bought the pretty candlestick with the plain columns was it at Torquay' Although it is 'not so great as some of the arts - the skill of handicraft in Silver Plate & architecture seems to me fairly representative of the taste of early England.' He discusses matters which relate to their work on "A History of English Furniture" for which Slocombe provided illustrations - progress on a task; plans wishes; contact with owners/aristos ;travels; suggestions; a sketch of a table; and so on. WITH: a page of notes in Slocombe's hand headed "oak furniture I am to paint"; a typed letter with ms. addition from the Treasurer's House York 2 March 1903 to give facilities for photgraphing; sketches of a couch x 2 and a settee at Hornby Castle with instructions in Slocombe's hand as 26 July 1904; a letter from F.W. Archer 26 Feb. 1903 about the Duke of Leeds permission to paint furniture; a typed letter signed from H.P. Dean 2pp. about a visit by Macquoid his enthusiasm for a settee and his wish for Slcoombe to paint it. An interesting insight into the creation of Macquoid's furniture history. ISBN 9781851490370. The Dictionary of English Furniture by Ralph Edwards (1954 Revised Edition) is the most authoritative general work on English antique furniture ever published. The first edition of this work was published 1924-27. It was instantly recognised as the primary reference on the evolution of English furniture from the Middle Ages to the Late Georgian period. It was consistently in demand and soon went out of print. The Second Edition, published in 1954, was entirely revised and enlargedby one of the two original collaborators, Ralph Edwards, who at that time was Keeper of the Department of Woodwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He was an outstanding authority, well placed to produce such a mammoth revision.
