Folded as issued with small tears marginal chips and signs of light handling VERY GOOD-. <br /><br /> An exceedingly scarce poster from a landmark film in 1980s LGBTQ and African American film history. ""A documentary-style feminist fiction film by Lizzie Borden that explores racism classism sexism and heterosexism in an alternative United States socialist democracy.<br /><br />"<i>The plot concerns two feminist groups in New York City each voicing their concerns to the public by pirate radio. One group led by an outspoken white lesbian Isabel Adele Bertei operates 'Radio Ragazza'. The other group led by a soft-spoken African-American Honey Honey operates 'Phoenix Radio. 'The local community is stimulated into action after a world-traveling political activist Adelaide Norris Jean Satterfield is arrested upon arriving at a New York City airport and suspiciously dies while in police custody. Also there is a Women's Army led by Hilary Hurst Hilary Hurst and advised by Zella Flo Kennedy that initially both Honey and Isabel refuse to join. This group along with Norris and the radio stations are under investigation by a callous FBI agent Ron Vawter. Their progress is tracked by three editors Becky Johnston Pat Murphy Kathryn Bigelow for a socialist newspaper who go so far they get fired</i>.<br /><br />"<i>The story involves several different women coming from different perspectives and attempts to show several examples of how sexism plays out on the street and how it can be dealt with through direct action. At one point two men attack a woman on the street and dozens of women on bicycles with whistles come to chase the men away and comfort the woman. The movie shows women despite their various differences organizing in meetings doing radio shows creating art wheatpasting putting a condom on a penis wrapping raw chicken at a processing plant etc. The film portrays a world rife with violence against women high female unemployment and government oppression. The women in the film start to come together to make a bigger impact by means that some would call terrorism</i>.<br /><br />"<i>Ultimately after both radio stations are suspiciously burned down Honey and Isabel team up and broadcast 'Phoenix Ragazza Radio' from stolen U-Haul vans. They also join the Women's Army which sends a group of terrorists to interrupt a broadcast of the President of the United States proposing that women be paid to do housework followed by bombing the antenna on top of the World Trade Center to prevent additionally destructive messages from the mainstream</i>.<br /><br />"<i>Greg Baise of the </i>Metro Times<i> called it 'an early '80s landmark of indie and queer cinema.' The film has had experienced somewhat of a renaissance after the 35mm restoration print premiered in 2016 at the Anthology Film Archives. Richard Brody of </i>The New Yorker<i> wrote 'the free ardent spontaneous creativity of Born in Flames emerges as an indispensable mode of radical change -- one that many contemporary filmmakers with political intentions have yet to assimilate.' Former owner's signature on flyleaf.</p> <p>First Edition of this rare technical manual of motion picture film developing and printing issued by the famous French firm founded by the Pathé brothers in the early days of cinematography. By the 1920s the Pathé firm was producing "the requisites for the entire motion picture process; i.e. raw stock cameras laboratory equipment studio and projectors" Jenkins "History of the Motion Picture" 1920 reprinted in Fielding ed. Technological History of Motion Pictures and Television pp. 1-6. The firm's manual contains detailed technical instructions on motion picture film development and printing as well as information on several Pathé innovations such as the Pathé-Baby 9.5 mm. motion picture projectors and cameras for amateur use introduced in 1922 Pathé's "film inversible" reversal film and the firm's techniques for tinting film stock and for producing full-color motion pictures. A stunning feature of the manual is its set of 107 actual frames of motion picture film illustrating correct and incorrect development the effect of temperature on film processing and the various uses of the "teintures Pathés" with which the firm colored its film stock. This tale based on the Algernon Charles Swinburne poem ""Faustine"" told of the daughter of a gambling hall hostess who when down on her luck impersonates her mother and reopens the palace. For one brief moment Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.'s younger brother William decided to invest in a film production company. He presented this one film starring premier Broadway actress Florence Reed and a cast of New York theatre actors after which there were no more films. Likely the ""quarter of a million dollar production"" did not make profits. The Art Nouveau presentation and various fashions Florence displays she played three roles make for a charming poster. Unfolded there is just a bit of soiling in the blank white margins NEAR FINE. unknown books

Archive related to the casting of the landmark film Cleopatra Jones
1972. Approximately 38 pp comprising typed carbon typescript manuscript and a few photocopied sheets. Some edge and corner wear but very good; minor soiling to sign. WITH: An 8 x 10 inch production still. Approximately 38 pp comprising typed carbon typescript manuscript and a few photocopied sheets. An excellent archive of material related to the casting of the title role of the iconic blaxploitation film Cleopatra Jones 1973 from the files of Cassius Weathersby who headed the open auditions held in seven American cities in the late summer and fall of 1972. Weathersby was tasked with liaising with radio stations local theater groups agencies and "every conceivable source in the black community" as one of the press releases included here states it in New York Chicago Los Angeles Atlanta Washington D.C. Cleveland and San Francisco in an effort to turn out large numbers of African-American women for the auditions and the archive gives a glimpse into how the publicity campaign was organized. Among the materials are a 3 pp typescript carbon from Vincent Tubbs of Warner Brothers one of the first African American publicists at a major Hollywood studio to Jimmy Booker and Associates in New York describing the effort headed by Weathersby to reach out to African American radio djs publications writers local drama groups etc not only to cast for Cleopatra Jones but as part of a larger effort to establish "legitimate in-put for black communities" in Hollywood a topic of great interest today; several drafts typed and handwritten of text for radio spots and and press releases for casting calls; additional pages of Weathersby's holograph notes lists of contacts etc; and a typed letter signed from the film's producer William Tennant thanking Weathersby for a job well done. Also present is an outstanding visual component in the form of a 22 x 14 inch sign printed on board advertising the Los Angeles casting call at a popular south LA club: "FILM TALENT SEARCH/FOR A BLACK BEAUTY/ASPIRING TO THE TITLE ROLE IN 'CLEOPATRA JONES' . INTERVIEWS HELD . AT MAVERICK'S FLAT/4225 CRENSHAW BLVD." Two photographs in the archive one of which features Weathersby show an example of the sign taped to a car door.<br/><br/>The role of Cleopatra Jones would ultimately go to Tamara Dobson a model with working class roots in Baltimore. At 6'2" she was a striking presence on the screen and her role and performance remain a watershed for black women in cinema: "Cleopatra Jones stands as the quintessential example of the potential of a new sensibility for shaping the black female presence in popular action cinema . The portrait of heroic black femininity stands as a departure of sorts from the typical black female presence within blaxploitation and Hollywood film in general . When Cleopatra Jones premiered on July 4 1973 it marked a key moment in black women's imagery within the popular culture of the era . The Black Power movement second-wave feminism and an increasingly visible black feminist agenda were influential dynamics shaping the social backdrop to the film's debut Dunn "Baad Bitches" and Sassy Supermamas pp 85ff. unknown books

The dates have been verified on a few and all fall during the years of the Pacific War including Tadashi Imai's Tanjiko-mura 1940 "Hanagoyomi hasshojin" 1940 based on the 19th century novel "Josei hongan" 1940 made in the same year as the novel by Kan Kikuchi Yasuki Chiba's "Kuso buraku" 1939. N.p.: N.p. 1920. Vintage reference photograph from the 1926 film. Photograph shot at high film speed showing a roadster jumping a train crossing with the train approaching seconds before possible impact. The astute viewer will note that the guard rail has not yet been broken. <br /> <br /> With a lengthy annotation in manuscript pencil on the verso regarding guerilla production techniques taken by Poverty Row studios during the 1920s.<br /> <br /> An stunning photograph capturing a split-second moment from a common trope of early action cinema - motorists escaping capture by deftly crossing train tracks narrowly avoiding collision with an oncoming train. The production number in the bottom left of the photograph "4296" matches known photographs from the lost 1925 action serial film "The Scarlet Streak" directed by Henry MacRae and starring Jack Dougherty and Lola Todd. <br /> <br /> Just as fascinating is the extensive annotation on the verso:<br /> <br /> "Poverty Row crews were accustomed to film stories in the 1920s streets. The city of Los Angeles becoming inured to the novelty a license costing $400 was required for shooting on public thoroughfares. Camera crews were trained to set up fast complete the street scenes quickly and vanish before the police arrived to check for a license. So grab shots were common.<br /> <br /> "The favorite action sequence was the transfer of an actor from an automobile to a moving train or crossing the road in front of the train and breaking the guard rails at the last moment.<br /> <br /> "The best place to film this was in Pasadena where the Santa Fe Railroad passed along the blocks of paved streets. A director or camera man boarded the train there carrying their heavy luggage to the observation car. As soon as the train moved out of the station they hauled a camera and tripod out of the bags. The motorcycle or automobile appeared at the designated spot where another cameraman was set up. As the actor made the daring transfer or split second crossing the camera cranked out the action. The conductor generally came along to toss the film makers off the train at the next stop but it was a marvel of economy for the novelty of early film making."<br /> <br /> 10.25 x 8 inches. Very Good plus with a small chip to the top left margin chipping to the bottom right margin with a minutae of image loss to the bottom right corner and edgewear and creasing to the right margin.
