The Film Till Now; A Survey of the Cinema
New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith 1930. First American edition. Close to fine in a lightly chipped dust jacket with some closed tears to the spine. 8vo 362pp illustrated; black cloth. A presentable copy of this early history of film illustrated throughout with photographic stills. The dust jacket features a montage of film strips designed by the author; the endpapers are a dizzying op-art pattern well ahead of that postwar movement.

Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith hardcover

New Documentary Films: New Methods; Films About Paratroopers Beachheads Peru Why We Fight The Nazis . .
New York: Museum of Modern Art Film Library 1944. Folded as for mailing with a few incidental dents still quite fine and fresh. Broadside approx. 7 X 21-1/2 in. printed on one side only. Slim bulletin board poster advertising MoMA's presentation of propaganda films from the Office of War Information the Office of Strategic Services the War Department the U.S. Navy and the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. The thirteen-week series was offered during the darkest period of the war opening a day before D-Day on June 5 1944. These various government agencies employed some of the greatest film talent available in their efforts and the films included in this series showcased the work of many including Frank Capra Anatole Litvak Walt Disney Garson Kanin Julien Bryan James Stewart Quentin Reynolds and Clark Gable. The Disney contribution "The Grain that Built a Hemisphere" was an animated short produced under the auspices of the Office of Inter-American Affairs recounting the history of corn and its importance in the growth of the Americas. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary in 1943. Capra's "Prelude to War" had won the award in 1942 and was the first of what would be seven films in the "Why We Fight Series". The first five were part of this presentation; the last two were made subsequently. Capra who had enlisted after the Pearl Harbor attack recognized the powerful role that film might play in the U.S. war effort after viewing Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will". "Why We Fight" was his response.

Museum of Modern Art Film Library unknown

Silent films - France - History and criticism - Exhibitions. Silent films - United States - History and criticism - Exhibitions. Summary: This book celebrates the achievements of Alice Guy Blache 1873-1968 the first woman motion picture director and producer. From 1896 to 1907 Guy Blache created films for Gaumont in Paris. In 1907 she moved to the United States and established her own film company Solax first located in Flushing Queens and then in Fort Lee New Jersey. From 1914 to 1920 Guy Blache was an independent director for a number of film companies. Despite her immensely productive and creative career Guy Blache's indispensable contribution to film history has been overlooked. She entered the world of film making at its nascent stage when films were seen primarily as a medium in the service of science or as an aDJunct to selling cameras. Working with Gaumont cameramen and cameras and the new technical advances for the projection of film she became one of the film pioneers ushering in the new era of motion pictures as a narrative form. Written by cinema history experts and curators this handsome volume brings to light a critical new mass of Guy Blache's film oeuvre in an effort to restore her to her rightful place in film history.
