Brief notation in holograph ink on the front wrapper and in pencil on the verso of the last page. Based on the novel "Thieves' Market" by A.I. Bezzerides who also wrote the screenplay. Based on Bezzerides' own experiences as a truck driver the author's adaptation of his own novel takes a direct aim at the fruit industry of the West coast resulting in essential proletarian literature. The novel's rich California scenery comes through beautifully in Dassin's visually stunning film reminiscent of the director's earlier noirs "Brute Force" in 1947 and "The Naked City" in 1948 Silver et al. Through Hartley's insistence friendship then romance blossoms and Dainton feels truly happy for the first time in her life.
