Bob Willoughby 1927-2009 studied with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles worked as a photographer for magazines such as "Life" "Look" and "Harper's Bazaar" and as a set photographer for every major studio documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork Ireland in 1972 working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s this was one of his final films though he would continue to photograph exhibit and publish books for the remainder of his life. Based on Anne Piper's 1959 novel "Marry at Leisure" about Candida Ferris who goes to live with her relatives after the death of her father. Bored with life she leaves for Paris where she meets a young student and becomes pregnant but keeps the baby a secret from her family. Bored yet again with life she leaves for Italy where she meets an American and is soon pregnant again. As she leaves Italy a woman gives her baby to Candida at the train station. So with two babies and one on the way her life is unraveling quickly and her only confidant is Savage Andrews the caretaker of her late father. Pink titled wrappers with a die-cut title window in the British style. Title page present dated July 1968 with credits for screenwriter and novelist Piper and screenwriter Davis. 113 leaves mechanical duplication on eye-rest green stock. Airman Adrien Dufourquet Belmondo is in Paris on shore leave eager to see his Agnes Dorléac. When he finally sees her only briefly before she's kidnapped and held for ransom by a treasure-hungry family friend. A James Bond spoof in the wake of Belmondo's swashbuckling success "Cartouche" 1962 opposite Claudia Cardinale with puzzle solving murder in Brasilia art thieves and a pursuit to find sacred Amazon treasure. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing Story and Screenplay: Written Directly for the Screen 1965 and winner of a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film 1964. Members of the cast and crew are featured throughout the collection including director de Brocca who earlier worked under directors Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut Belmondo cameramen and an extensive look at the scenery of Brazil and Paris. A riveting Peplum sword-and-sandal swashbuckler set in 1700s France where a gang member named Cartouche Belmondo forms his own band of knaves deciding his former gang to be too unethical. He steals from the rich to give to the poor enlists in the army to escape capture and meets Venus Cardinale a gypsy prisoner who joins his new gang. Venus' love proves fatal and Cartouche rolls her into a lake in a stolen carriage vowing revenge knowing it will likely lead him to the gallows. Belmondo and Cardinale's interaction is palpable but they would star in only two other films together Mauro Balognini's "La viaccia" 1961 and José Giovanni's "Scoumoune" 1972. Photos 6.75 x 9 inches. The two drive away and decide not to report the accident to the police. Alcoholic journalist Peter Fallow Willis anxious for a story hears about the incident through a local black community activist. Once the story is out the end is inevitable for Sherman. Set in New York shot on location there and in California. Danielle is a beautiful model separated from her conjoined twin Dominique. When her neighbor an aspiring journalist suspects Danielle of a brutal murder the horror of Danielle's disturbing past begins to surface. Director Brian De Palma based his original story on a Life magazine article about conjoined twins in the Soviet Republic who had been successfully separated but were experiencing psychological problems as a result of the operation. With its use of visually dense point-of-view and split-screen camera techniques "Sisters" is one of De Palma's earliest forays into erotic voyeurism as a conduit for psychological horror paving the way for a string of idiosyncratic psychosexual projects in the ensuing years such as "Obsession" 1976 "Dressed to Kill" 1980 "Blow Out" 1981 and "Body Double" 1984 among others. Given its focus on the anxiety of the gaze "Sisters" can also be read as an homage to Alfred Hitchcock-openly referencing "Rope" 1948 "Rear Window" 1954 and "Psycho" 1960-and indeed the film was even scored by Bernard Hermann a frequent musical collaborator for Hitchcock's films.
