Counter-Attack Original screenplay for the 1945 film
Culver City CA: Columbia Pictures 1944. Eleventh Draft script for the 1945 film. Copy belonging to assistant director Early Bellamy with his name in holograph pencil on the front wrapper and some annotations in holograph pencil throughout. Laid in are four revised pages. Many pages with a vertical center fold made by the actress as scenes were completed. Set on the Eastern front of World War II a paratrooper force lands behind enemy lines and Alexei Kulkov Muni as well as local interpreter Chapman take several Germans captive in a basement which caves in trapping them all in the cellar. They interrogate each other and pull ploys on each other fighting for control while Kulkov waits to be rescued. Made during the brief friendship of the United States and the Soviet Union and based on the play "Pobyeda" Victory by Mikhail Ruderman and Ilya Vershinin this film was later castigated as sympathetic to communism and several of the actors were called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently blacklisted. Set in Eastern Europe shot on location in California. Grey titled wrappers noted as Eleventh Draft on the front wrapper dated July 28 1944 with credits for screenwriter John Howard Lawson. With 53 studio still photographs tipped in throughout four pages of retakes and added scenes tipped in at the rear as well as a number of holograph annotations primarily denoting the titles of various musical numbers. Based on the short story "Stork Don't Bring Babies" by S.K. Lauren Grable and Dailey play a showbiz couple who discover in successive order that they cannot have children that they can adopt children and that they aren't really fit to raise children. But things get better with the help of several musical numbers scored by Harold Arlen. Bound in green faux leather boards with gilt titles and rule and marbled endpapers. Profusely annotated by a studio secretary on the inside rear wrapper over time regarding at least eight script revisions with dates ranging from 10/4/50 to 11/13/50. Based on the 1948 novel by Nevil Shute. The second pairing of Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Dietrich after their splash together in "Destry Rides Again" 1939. Theodore Honey is an aeronautical engineer being sent to Labrador from London to examine the wreckage of a new passenger plane designed by his company. His theory is that the planes are susceptible to metal fatigue after a specific amount of time in the air. The absent minded Honey boards the Reindeer class plane and only realizes that this plane is due to fail in the next few hours after the plane is airborne. He decides to warn the crew and creates an incident regardless of whether he is right or wrong. A somewhat obscure and much underappreciated drama. Hans Kraly writes to drama critic and screenwriter Ward Morehouse asking when they can get together in Hollywood for "one glamorous night". He signs the letter "Regards! Sincerely Hans Kraly". The letter is creased from having been folded numerous times and the top edge is lightly chipped with several short tears. Good. <p>Hans Hanns in German was a German actor and screenwriter known for his 30 film collaborations with director Ernst Lubitsch. He was nominated for three Academy Awards as a screenwriter winning the Award for the 1928 film "The Patriot".</p><p>Ward Morehouse 1895-1966 was an American theater critic playwright and author. In 1926 he began writing the Broadway After Dark column for the New York Sun. In the early 1930's he worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter. Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier were lauded for their performances in this Academy Award winning drama in which two prisoners from a chain-gang escape. One white one African American the men originally cooperate out of necessity as they are chained to one another. However as they grow familiar with one another a deep bond and mutual respect develops between the men. "The Defiant Ones" was shot on a closed set due to the then-provocative subject matter. Special screenings were orchestrated in the southern United States for integrated audiences a relatively uncommon occurrence at the time. Montgomery Alabama however chose to cancel an integrated screening when the White Citizen's Committee Council protested the film claiming it gave rise to "moral support and financial gain to subversive propagandists" AFI catalogue. The letter states that Kremser wrote the screenplay with Kinski in mind as the lead role in a film that would be a "political science-fiction fairy tale." Both script and letter German text. The year Kinski received Kremser's script 1982 was a busy year for the actor. He just finished shooting James Toback's "Love and Money" and began working on James Glickenhaus' film "The Soldier" Aaron Lipstadt's "Android" and also worked with longtime friend and enemy Werner Herzog as Brian Sweeney in "Fitzcarraldo." Carnival barker Spencer Tracy befriends an elderly concessionaire and turns the old man's picturesque but stodgy display depicting Dante's Inferno into a major attraction complete with full orchestra and scantily clad "devil girls." He eventually buys up the rest of the carnival using cold-blooded tactics that result in the suicide of a fellow concessionaire and within five years is a millionaire tycoon of the entertainment industry. In an important sequence for nearly ten minutes the movie audience is treated to a lavish depiction of hell wherein Tracy is warned of the dangers of hell magnificently photographed by cinematographer Rudolph Mate. Although the Fox Film Corporation produced the film it was distributed after Fox's merger with Twentieth Century which began trading on May 31 1935. Green titled wrappers with a holograph pencil notation of project No. 1107 dated 11/26/34 and with credits in manual type for Klein and Yost.
