‎Parachute to Paradise Original screenplay for the unreleased 1969 film‎

‎New York: American Broadcasting Company ABC 1968. Revised Draft script for the unreleased 1969 film "Parachute to Paradise" with a single notation on the title page. Written for screen by Allan Gittler the New York-based minimalist designer of electric guitars and a virtuoso musician who later changed his name to Avraham Bar Rashi. Gittler was a film editor in New York during the 1960s and 1970s patented a photographic printer for motion pictures wrote a novel called "The Rose-Colored View" and made an 18-minute short film called "New York New York New York" comprised of 700 photo stills and a score that he and jazzman Elvin Jones composed. He died in 2003. Roger Davis an actor in the film notes that it was completed but not shown until a broadcast on ABC in 1972. Davis: "It was written by the late guitar designer Allan Gittler a.k.a. Avraham Bar Rashi directed by Floyd L. Petersen sic scored by noted jazz arranger Gil Evans and also starred Natividad Abascal Astrid Aanning Martin J. Kelley Bret Morrison and the Boston garage band The Bagatelle. was an avant-garde 'film fantasy' where Roger played the hero of a popular cigarette commercial campaign who happens to skydive. It was filmed in the summer of 1968 beginning June 3 during Roger's short leave of absence from 'Dark Shadows'. ABC televised the movie in 1972 at the height of Roger's popularity on 'Alias Smith and Jones.' Since the film has gone ignored by IMDB and other web sources here are some reflections provided by writer Gittler to 'Vintage Guitar' magazine in 2000: 'I had had enough of my career and quit to ride my track bike through Central Park and write the script of my movie 'Parachute to Paradise.' After the heartiness of 15 weeks of preproduction casting the principal players and 200 extras seven weeks of principal photography writing the music and seven months of editing and doing enormous publicity a fallout with my producer relegated the production to a couple of cans in the laboratory vault.'" Gittler's only film credit: guitarist in "Hold for Gloria Christmas" an episode of "Naked City" Season 4 Episode 1 1962. Purple titled wrappers with a credit for Gittler. File copy rubber stamp to the front wrapper.<br/><br/>Conrad Nagel and Renée Adoree star in this Silent film today lost originally directed by Josef von Sternberg. Midway into shooting Von Sternberg was fired by MGM and replaced by Phil Rosen. <br/><br/>Rosen's many changes completely altered von Sternberg's version to the point that it was unrecognizable and in a bizarre twist MGM ultimately released both versions: the original one as "Exquisite Sinner" in 1926 credited to both Von Sternberg and Rosen running 60 minutes and Rosen's extensively reworked version as "Heaven on Earth" in 1927 runtime unknown. <br/><br/>AFI Catalog notes that von Sternberg was replaced as director on January 17 1926 which would place this script dated in mid-December 1925 firmly within the time frame that von Sternberg was still the director. <br/><br/>It is rumored that the Warner Brothers and Turner Entertainment archives hold a full print of this film but as of 2014 no print has surfaced. Based on Coster's novel "La Legende et les Aventures heroiques joyeuses et glorieuses d'Ulenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzak au pays de Flandres et ailleurs" 1867. Resistance piece about Till Philipe a prankster and progressive leader in the Netherlands during its reformation who organizes resistance armies with his girlfriend Nele Berger. The film itself was one of a few postwar co-productions by East Germany's state-owned DEFA and France the others being Raymond Rouleau's "Die Hexen von Salem" 1957 "The Witches of Salem" Jean-Paul Le Chanois' two-part "Die Elenden" 1959 "Les Misérables" and Louis Daquin's "Trübe Wasser" 1960 "Muddy Waters". When he finally sees her only briefly before she's kidnapped and held for ransom by a treasure-hungry family friend. A James Bond spoof in the wake of Belmondo's swashbuckling success "Cartouche" 1962 opposite Claudia Cardinale with puzzle solving murder in Brasilia art thieves and a pursuit to find sacred Amazon treasure. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing Story and Screenplay: Written Directly for the Screen 1965 and winner of a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film 1964. <br/><br/>Members of the cast and crew are featured throughout the collection including director de Brocca who earlier worked under directors Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut Belmondo cameramen and an extensive look at the scenery of Brazil and Paris. Boats racing Belmondo dangling from a speeding car and languid down times as cast and crew break for naps in the shade photographer Trigo's often provocative angles capture the director in dimly lit noirish scenarios and a glimpse of the action-packed thrill-ride of shooting a Bond spoof with elements of MacGuyver. Action sequences men in military regalia and romantically charged images of Belmondo and Cardinale with most representing Belmondo either charming people or dueling with swords. Housed in original brown envelope noted as "CARTOUCHE" on the flap. Numerical annotations in holograph pencil on the versos. Also included are a few leaves of French press material on stationery from the film's distributor Cinedis. <br/><br/>A riveting Peplum sword-and-sandal swashbuckler set in 1700s France where a gang member named Cartouche Belmondo forms his own band of knaves deciding his former gang to be too unethical. He steals from the rich to give to the poor enlists in the army to escape capture and meets Venus Cardinale a gypsy prisoner who joins his new gang. Venus' love proves fatal and Cartouche rolls her into a lake in a stolen carriage vowing revenge knowing it will likely lead him to the gallows. <br/><br/>Belmondo and Cardinale's interaction is palpable but they would star in only two other films together Mauro Balognini's "La viaccia" 1961 and José Giovanni's "Scoumoune" 1972. <br/><br/>Photos 6.75 x 9 inches.
